3 Observational Network (Uzhydromet) 78 meteorological stations, 19 hydrological stations (including 3 specialized lake stations) 129 hydrological gauging stations. 1 water-balance station 15 aviation meteorological stations 1- upper-air meteorological complex 1- station of background monitoring 61 agrometeorological stations 30 agrometeorological gauging stations. 5 snow avalanche stations

4 OBSERVATIONAL NETWORK OF ENVIRONMENAL POLLUTION pollution of surface water on 58 water bodies, 86 points, 108 gauge-lines hydro biological observations at 10 water bodies, 27 gauge-lines atmospheric precipitation pollution at 16 stations atmospheric air pollution in 32 towns and settlements at 61 stationary points soil pollution with toxicants of agricultural origin in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and in 12 provinces soil pollution with toxicants of industrial origin near 14 towns

6 Drought Management Centre in Central Asia The major aim of the Centre is: To serve as an operational Centre for drought management in Central Asia, particularly for drought prediction, monitoring, early warning, capacity building and mitigating activities Participants: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan

7 Drought Management Centre in Central Asia Important steps (I): The establishment of a Drought Management Centre in Central Asia was raised during the 15th OSCE Forum Technical Workshop on preparation towards Terms of Reference for a regional drought centre in Central Asia 20-21 November, 2007 Tashkent, Uzbekistan Outcomes: identify the need and expectation for the Drought Management Centre in Central Asia prepare the Terms of Reference of the Centre

8 Drought Management Centre in Central Asia Important steps (II): Technical Workshop - May, 2008, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Outcomes: Political commitment by Central Asian countries in the establishment of a Drought Management Centre in Central Asia The ToR for a Drought Management Centre in Central Asia with identification of further steps to be implemented.

9 CACILM –Central Asian Countries Initiative for Land Management Goal: Restore, maintain and enhance the productive functions of land in Central Asia, leading to improved economic and social well-being of those who depend on these resources while preserving the ecological functions of the land. CA partners: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Development partners: Asian Development Bank, Canadian International Development Agency, Convention to Combat Desertification, Project of the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, Global Environmental Facility, Global Mechanism, International Center for Agricultural Research on Dry Areas, International Fund for agricultural Development etc.

10 CACILM Sustainable Land Management Information Systems Goal: assist the five Central Asian Countries develop and design information system to support an integrated approach to land use planning and management. Main tasks: Monitoring and Data Collection - the overall design of systems for acquisition of economic, social, and environmental data and information Information Technology - the overall design of computer databases and analytical programs, including geographic information systems, for storing and analyzing data and information.

11 CACILM Sustainable Land Management Information Systems Compilation and collation of national land degradation information identifying main institutions in charge of relevant issues, studies, databases, mapping and information systems, situation analysis, needs assessment, etc. Design specific arrangements for data and information exchange - establish a land degradation information system where global and national information can be linked. Establishing training programs - training programs will be established in each of the National SLMIS Administrative Agencies.
