1 Chapter 7 – Canada at War World War II

2 After WWI The Great Depression hit Germany very hard Many of their money problems were because of the ‘Treaty of Versailles’. The Treaty of Versailles A document stating that Germany had to pay back countries they hurt in WWI. But because of the Depression, Germany didn’t have enough money to do this.

3 World War II Axis powers: Led by Germany, Italy and Japan Allies: Led by Great Britain and France 1933 – Hitler became the dictator of Germany. -The Nazi’s worked hard to keep Hitler in power. -The Nazi’s controlled all activities in Germany. -They controlled the newspapers, radios, literature, music and art. -There was NO freedom of speech. -The secret police arrested people who were openly against Hitler and his ideas.

4 1935 – Jews were no longer allowed to work in hospitals, banks or many other places. Nazi’s beat many Jews and burned Jewish homes. Hitler decided that Germany would not obey the ‘Treaty of Versailles’. He secretly built a strong German army, made weapons and airplanes. Germany and Italy were now on the same side (Hitler and Benito Mussolini)

5 The Road to War (CANADA) At first, Canada did NOT enter WWII. They supported Britain by providing war materials, food, and a small volunteer army. They used ‘merchant marine’ ships to transport goods. Canada formally declared war on Germany on September 10, 1939. Canada’s air force trained Allied pilots In May 1940, Canada moved from a limited role in the war to a total commitment. P. 105 R&R - #1 and 2
