2 Naming Ions and Ionic Compounds (continued) Oxyanions are named according to the relative number of oxygen atoms: 1.-ate = more O atoms (ClO 3 -1, SO 4 -2, NO 3 -1 ) 2.-ite = fewer O atoms (ClO 2 -1, SO 3 -2, NO 2 -1 ) Halogen oxyanions follow the naming pattern established by chlorine: 1.ClO 4 -1 = perchlorate 3. ClO 2 -1 = chlorite 2.ClO 3 -1 = chlorate 4. ClO -1 = hypochlorite So what is the name of IO 4 -1 ? BrO 3 -1 ?

3 Naming Ions and Ionic Compounds (continued) Refer to Table 8-8, p.227, and the LEFT side of your Naming Compounds Flowchart Cation (metal) + anion (nonmetal) Transition metals have many different oxidation numbers, so you have to specify the oxidation number with a Roman numeral. (EX: FeO = iron (II) oxide; Fe 2 O 3 = iron (III) oxide)
