We get Leo! As the fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo represents the fifth stage in the evolution of man and his place in the universe. As the fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo represents the fifth stage in the evolution of man and his place in the universe. The Leo need is … The Leo need is … to develop man’s creative urge. Creativity is not entirely an emotional urge in Leo, it is also an expression of ego. The mind and heart are united in Leo to represent man’s ultimate individuality. 19 Leos are stubborn and impervious to changes not of their own making. They are however, able to accomplish things in life because of their tenacity in sticking with projects when others lose patience and stamina. Attempts to back them into a corner, or demanding that they change their thinking or behavior will quickly reveal the extent of their intractable nature. Unfortunately, stubbornness in the Leo personality is dictated more often than not by their ego.

Leos react physically to everything they experience. Leos tackle projects others would not attempt, though they cannot help calling as much attention as possible to their efforts. Before they assess the practicality or worth of what they are doing, before they sort out their true emotions, and before they take time to reason things out intellectually, their tendency is to shoot first and ask questions later. Their penchant for exaggeration and overreaction works well in the theater, advertising schemes, and other situations where a “bigger than life” approach is desirable. Leos are often guilty however, of habitually turning a mundane problem or fairly routine situation into an overblown crisis, much to the confusion and annoyance of those around them.

Leo’s Astrological Symbol The majestic lion, the King of the Beasts, is Leo’s symbol. Throughout history, the lion has symbolized sovereignty, rulership, and courage. “The lion’s size and strength have captured human imagination since ancient times”. Leos, like lions, are thought to be strong leaders. They generally have a regal quality to them, and possess a noble manner that is hard to miss.

Leo’s Astrological Glyph The glyph for Leo represents the mane of the lion. The glyph for Leo represents the mane of the lion. 

The Leo Myth The medieval legend of Parzival.

Parzival Parzival is the epitome of the hero on the quest. Our mythical hero, like many other heroes, is fatherless at the beginning of the story … He decides to become a knight.

Strangely, Leo is often fatherless, or has a difficult relationship with the father. It seems as though the deeper significance that underlies the sign requires a kind of search for a true Father, an inner self or spiritual core. And the call to leave what is known and comfortable for the sake of a dangerous but shining future is also characteristic of Leo. Often he must rebel against authority or social mores to begin his quest. No matter where you find him, Leo always has his eye on becoming bigger, better, greater. There is always something beckoning him, more attractive than the place he’s in. Strangely, Leo is often fatherless, or has a difficult relationship with the father. There is always something beckoning him, more attractive than the place he’s in.

Parzival Parzival begins his adventures Parzival has a vision in a forest when he finds himself in a mysterious glittering castle There is a sick old king There is an enigmatic and beautiful woman … a sword and an object which comes to be known in later Christianized legends as the Holy Grail Parzival stares, bewildered at this drama, but does not say anything a great angry voice speaks and tells him he has made a dreadful mistake and failed What does this mean?

Parzival awakens from his vision cold and alone in the wood. He realizes that he has been blind and ignorant, and resolves to find the Grail Castle again one day. The second part of the legend concerns the process of his slow maturing. Eventually, a man and a true hero, he rediscovers the castle after much pain and suffering and the passage of twenty years. This time he remembers to ask the question. And he discovers that he is really the son of the Grail King, and becomes the new King and custodian of the Stone of Life.

If we remove the later embellishments which Christianity has placed over the tale, we can see in it the pattern of Leo’s life. For the quest of Leo is the quest of the Self: Who am I? What does my life mean? What is it that makes me different from others? It is a deeply introverted and profound quest. Many Leos are not aware in any way that this is their road; but they follow it nonetheless. What does my life mean? What is it that makes me different from others? It is a deeply introverted and profound quest. Many Leos are not aware in any way that this is their road; but they follow it nonetheless. The creative process doesn’t really have anything to do with the audience. It is between Leo and himself, the think within him that creates. It is this discovery that an Other, a Something inside is capable of offering creative ideas and images through the medium of one’s own mind and hands that is Leo’s most important discovery. That’s the road to the Grail Castle. The Leo who is courageous enough to pursue this road will come eventually to his own centre.

For this reason too, Leo is self-centered. He has a kind of constant self-consciousness, a sort of watcher that is always watching himself watching himself, that never really allows him to be totally aware of the environment except in relation to himself. It is almost impossible for Leo to detach from himself. Nor should he. His whole journey is about discovering who that watcher is. Leo’s tendency towards self-centeredness can be irritating to other signs. But it needs to be seen for what it is: a powerful drive towards self-recognition. Leo also needs to understand it, because otherwise he can make the mistake of assuming that it’s the little ‘me’ that’s the object of all that energy. Then he really becomes insufferable. He can inflate, and think he’s the most wonderful thing in the world. God’s chosen son to whom all the world owes obeisance. But if Leo ever understands that the Other is not him, but his source, then he has truly come to the vision of the Grail, and becomes a light which illumines the lives of others not by what he does, but by what he is - the true hero who has found his journey’s goal.

We’ll now mention some of the challenges of Leo. Remember though we are talking about the energy of Leo and there are many types of energy.

The Labours of Hercules

The Labour in Leo The Slaying of the Nemean Lion

Hercules completes his task afraid yet unafraid, alone yet not alone Hercules faces the lion “the lion and serpents must be slain again and once again”

Interpretation of the myth This fifth sign of Leo is significant, for the number five is, esoterically speaking, the number of man Hercules, symbolising the lion of the Self or soul the Nemean lion, the co- ordinated dominant personality of the lower self What does the lion represent?

Further Comments The culmination of the previous four labours covering the path of Probation As marking the beginning of the path of Discipleship The lower reasoning mind must be sacrificed to the universal mind and the lower self of individual self-assertion conquered the time has come when the lion of the soul must prevail over the lion of the self group conscious and working towards the good of the whole.

Though Venus trine Jupiter does not guarantee wealth and worldly success, it does imply a great attraction for these things, and more than a few opportunities in life to attain them without too much effort or worry. It also implies intellectual success and perhaps talent for art, music or drama. Even if these individuals are moderate in some things, there is bound to be some area of great lavishness, self- indulgence, or extravagance.

The strength of will power, emotional intensity, and physical stamina of those with Mars square Pluto are usually enough to get them out in front. What may cause them to fall behind again, however, is being too aggressive or threatening. They are apt to have incisive minds, and know exactly what they want and how to get it. For their own growth as individuals they learn to avoid giving in to revenge, jealousy and possessiveness.

Sun opposite Neptune indicates that no matter how successful these individuals may be in some areas of life, accomplishing their true goals is very difficult. They may be able to capture public attention but it may be for the wrong reason. Their message may be heard but misinterpreted. If they gain wealth and status, they find these things do not satisfy them. No matter what success they make of themselves in the eyes of the rest of the world, they are nevertheless attracted by goals that are illusive or unattainable. Moon conjunct Neptune indicates those who can become victims of their own emotions. Their imaginations can be the source of remarkable creativity or the means of irrational fears that cripple their actions. They may be totally insecure but also capable of being oblivious to danger. Idealistic and intuitive, perhaps even psychic, they may also be foolish enough to let discouragement or self pity impede personal growth and progress. Much will depend on the strength and maturity they develop as individuals.

Mercury conjunct Saturn indicates those who may be too formal and structured in their thinking to give credence to possibilities that don’t fit their preconceived ideas or plans. They are ambitious and want their ideas to be looked upon as authoritative. Most of them have very little disposition for engaging in tact or idle flattery, or perhaps in some individuals, it is lack of understanding of how to go about more personal and seductive ways of communication.

There is no certain indication of the depth of intellect in individuals with Mercury conjunct Venus but they are sure to have humor and charm. They are good talkers and are apt to possess remarkable communicative or artistic talents. Their pleasure in learning can mean research and serious scholarship in some of them and fondness for gossip in others.
