2  The United Nations was set up in 1945 by 50 nations who signed a Charter promising to abide by the aims of the organisation.  It was meant to provide an opportunity for nations of the world to work together to improve human rights and freedoms, maintain world peace and encourage social and economic progress. 4 What does the United Nations do?  It encourages countries to solve their disputes peacefully  It encourages countries to support human rights and freedoms  It encourages social and economic progress, especially for poorer countries in the world  It gives a chance for countries to discuss world problems and co-operate in coming up with solutions.

These are smaller organisations within the UN that “specialise” in skills and expertise to help meet the needs of member countries, especially developing nations. 9 The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO)  The FAO is concerned with working on methods to improve the food supply for farmers.  It deals with improving crop yields, nutrition and the quality of crops.  It also deals with introducing new farming methods for farmers.
