4 ETHICAL USE OF INTERNET MATERIALS VIDEOSMUSICPRINTED MATERIALS ALWAYS PROVIDE CREDIT AND AFFIRMATION TO THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE RESOURCE DO NOT MAKE A PROFIT FROM OTHER’S ORIGINAL WORK UP TO 10% OR 3 MINUTES MAY BE USED WITHOUT NEEDING SPECIAL PERMISSION YOU CAN USE UP TO 30 SECONDS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE NEEDING PERMISSION SMALL PORTIONS MAY BE USED USUALLY ABOUT 10% BUT MAKE SURE TO CITE THE RESOURCE SIMILAR IDEAS TO THE ORIGINAL WORK IS STILL A COPYRIGHT ISSUE CHANGING THE LYRYCS DOES NOT MAKE IT YOUR OWN PARAPHRASE WHEN POSSIBLE APPLYING THE FAIR USE PRINCIPALS TO EDUCATIONAL USE.

5 COPYRIGHT GUIDELINES COPYRIGHT GIVES LEGAL PROTECTION TO AN ORIGIANAL CREATIVE WORK EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO USE SOME COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL UNDER THE FAIR USE LAW WITH CERTAIN GUIDELINES. FAIR LAW CAN BE USED FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION INCLUDING RESEARCH, TEACHING, REPORTING AND PARODY. EVERY ASSIGNMENT MUST BE EVALUATED DIFFERENTLY.THE FACTORS INCLUDE: 1. THE FACTORS TO CONSIDER ARE 2. THE PURPOSE AND NATURE OF THE WORK 3. THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION THAT IS DUPLICATED 4. THE REASON FOR USING THE RESOURCE CREATIVE COMMONS IS AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE WHERE STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS CAN FIND VIDEOS, PHOTOS, MUSIC, AND POETRY THAT ARE FREE TO USE.

6 PLAGIARISM WHEN A PERSON TAKES CREDIT OR USES SOMEONE ELSES WORK. EDUCATORS CAN USE THESE FOUR TOOLS TO HELP THEM DETECT PLAGIARISM.  PLAGIARISMCHECKER.COM- A TEACHER CAN COPY AND PASTE A PHRASE FROM A STUDENT’S PAPER TO A SEARCH BOX AND IT WILL SEARCH FOR PLAGIARISM.  TURNITIN- USES PATTERNS AND ALGORITHMS TO CHECK FOR PLAGIARISM AND INCORRECT CITITIONS.  GRAMMARLY- HELPS CHECK THE PAPER FOR SPELLING, GRAMMAR, AND PLAGIARISM. IT ALSO GIVES VOCABULARY SUGGESTIONS. THIS IS A GREAT SITE FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN TO USE WHEN WRITING A PAPER.  WRITECHECK- HELPS CHECK CORRECT SPELLING, GRAMMAR AND USAGE AS WELL AS CORRECT CITATIONS AGAINST THE WRITE CHECK DATABASE.

7 HOW TO CITE INTERNET RESOURCES Why do we have to cite resources? 1.We must cite resources so that credit is given to the original creator of an idea, song, research paper or video. 2.We must cite resources so that others can go to the original source to check your writing for accurate content. When and how do we cite? 1.When you use a direct quote always put it in quotation marks and then writing the name of the author. 2.You can use footnotes, endnotes and bibliographies. 3.An image is cited at the bottom of the picture. 4.A video can be cited either on the title page or immediately afterward it’s played. 5.When citing your work, remember to include the link to the original source if it is available.
