By 1945 they had murdered about 6 million of the inmates. Some were killed by firing squads, others died of starvation or as a result of experiments performed on them by German doctors and scientists, and most died in poison gas chambers. 8. Your task: Was Africa Civilised in the 16 th Century? Produce a display/poster answering the ‘key’ questions above. Research three West African tribes (Mali, Benin, Songhai) to gain evidence to support your answer. You will have to define what a civilised society would include – culturally, socially, politically, economically – and find information and examples to support your view. You will work in small groups so must decide how you will split the task and who will be responsible for the different elements of the task. Introduction  Here you need to say that most people in European countries thought that Africans were not civilized, and so it was acceptable to be make them slaves.  You also need to say what you are going to do in your presentation – either prove that Africa WAS civilised or that it was NOT.
