4 Thousands of Africans in the 18 th and 19 th centuries got taken to America to be sold as slaves to the white men and women. The Africans lived very hard lives. What made their lives hard was that they didn’t get fed properly, they didn’t get enough sleep, they worked for very long hours and they got taken away from their families. Music played an important part in the slaves lives because it expressed unhappiness and how they were feeling. The most popular instrument was the drums. The drums were played in a variety of ways. For example, the slaves could hit the drum with the palm of their hands or with a stick.
