1 Management Why do we do what we do? How does this affect the outcomes we achieve?

2 A Thought: If we continue to do what we have always done we will continue to get the same outcomes. How perfect are the outcomes you achieve?

3 The Impossible Task Refereeing management helps to create an environment ideal for the players to exercise their skill levels. The trick is to manage in a manner as to ensure a fair contest ensues and yet to manage preventatively in order to provide as big a spectacle as possible. How does this gel with the fact that the referee should be in the background and as unobtrusive as possible? Isn't this a contradiction? Andre Watson

4 Tonight’s Session  All points are questions to consider  Don’t be quick to rubbish an idea  Challenge yourself Ask:  What do I do?  What is the impact of my style?  What impact would a different approach have?

5 Arrival Pre-match game plan  Written?  Team influenced vs self influenced? What do you wear to the ground?  When do you arrive?  Clothing and Jewellery?  Listening to the iPod? Conversation with Team Management  1st time vs re-establishing link?  Noting previous team form?  Noting context of the day’s fixture?

6 Pre-Match Warm Up  Public vs private space?  Set routine vs unstructured? Conversation with Team Captains  Individually vs Together?  Key message?  Parting word? Kick-off  First vs Last vs Whenever to the field?  Message to #10?

7 On-Field Poor decision  Slogan?  Gesture? Foul Play  High tackle- initial comment?  Individual Space?

8 On-Field Communication  Player Chat?  Repeated infringements?  Breakdown instructions? Body language  Smile?  Offside- push back?

9 Post match  Departure from the field?  Dialogue with coaches- who directs?  Attendance at the after-match?

10 How would you like players to remember you?  As a referee?  As a person?

11 NEVER: 1. Be un-approachable 2. Give the impression that you take things that are said on the field personally 3. Give the impression that you are weak 4. Consider yourself more important than the players or the game 5. Assume that the players respect you because you are the referee, you’ll have to earn respect.

12 ALWAYS: 1. Have empathy with the players and their predicaments 2. Ensure that the players share the responsibility for outcomes on the field 3. Stay in control of your emotions (Exercise calmness!) 4. Be well prepared 5. ENJOY
