March 24, 2015 EBSCO Perspective on DDA DDA Workshop

AGENDA EBSCO DDA – How it Works DDA Benefits & Challenges EBSCO Position on DDA

How it Works Library selects eBooks to include in DDA EBSCO provides OCLC MARC records DDA titles are discoverable and accessible on EBSCOhost (no charges up to this point) Once meaningful use occurs, eBooks are automatically purchased Deposit account or pay-as-you-go EBSCO eBook DDA

Meaningful Use More than 10 minutes active use in full text More than 10 page turns in full text Downloading entire eBook Printing, copying, or saving any portion of full text EBSCO eBook DDA

DDA Benefits Provides a way to expose users to more content than outright purchase Opportunity for users to preview full text at no cost Libraries only purchase what gets used, effectively assuring 100% circulation for purchased titles Simple budget control, no risk of overspending

DDA Challenges If a library knows which titles it needs to own and have ongoing access to in perpetuity, it is easier to simply purchase them than to manage a DDA program for them Not all publishers participate in DDA Titles can drop out of a DDA pool DDA administration more burdensome than outright purchase

DDA Challenges Discovery – Standard Approach Load MARC records into catalog –Involves potential customizations, adds, removals, changes from un-triggered to triggered (from discovery records to point-of-purchase records)

DDA Challenges Discovery – Alternative Approaches Discovery service in place of catalog –No need to load and manage discovery records, adds/removals automatically reflected in and full text searchable in discovery service, only load point-of- purchase records when title has been triggered for purchase

DDA Challenges Discovery – Alternative Approaches eBook platform in place of catalog –No need to load and manage discovery records, adds/removals automatically reflected on eBook platform, only load point-of-purchase records when title has been triggered for purchase Other…

EBSCO Position on DDA Fully support whichever mix of models is right for each library –DDA –Outright purchase –Both DDA and outright purchase –Other models

EBSCO Position on DDA Be transparent about model trending, e.g.: –Subscription and purchase trending positively –DDA purchase trending relatively well –DDA STL trending negatively Dramatic price increases, multi-year embargoes, publishers opting out of model altogether Continue exploring ways to make DDA management easier for libraries
