1. How are we Changing North Carolina? A look at soil quality, conservation and farming.

2. Activity  Click on a map of NC- counties http://geology.com/county-map/north- carolina.shtml http://geology.com/county-map/north- carolina.shtml  Locate Cumberland county. What is this area known for?  What type of soil do you expect to find in this area? WHY?

3. Activity  Go to the 1884 soil survey map of Cumberland County- dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ ncma ps /id/250  List the types of soil they notice. Which type seems to dominate the area? What would that soil be good for?

4. Activity  Use the internet to find out what type of crops are grown in Cumberland county.  Write a list of at least 6-10 crops.  Why do you think those crops are prominent there? Discuss with your partner, write 2-3 sentences.  Predict what kind of changes would be seen in a map from 1922. Would there be more categories of soil or fewer? Would the soil change? Why or why not?
