4 Organic vs. Conventional Farming Organic farming – Use natural fertilizers and compost – Use bugs, birds and traps to get rid of pests – Hand weed – Feed animals grass and give them time to roam in fresh air Conventional Farming – Use chemical fertilizer – Spray insecticides to reduce bugs and pests – Use chemicals to manage weeds – Give animals antibiotics and hormones

5 Organic vs. Conventional Farming The difference between organic and conventional farming methods are quite significant. Many conventionally grown products use chemicals which organic farmers do no use.

7 Cost It is true that organic food costs more than conventional food. Here is why: Organic farmers have to do labor intensive work to keep pests away form there products. On the other hand, conventional farmers can just use pesticides Organic farmers must get a seal that certifies their food organic.

8 Appearance of Organic Food vs. Conventional Food

9 Appearance In most cases people tend to think that organic produce looks much different than conventional produce. In some case they are right, but in most they are wrong. Conventional farmers coat their fruits and some vegetables with wax. The wax gives them a nice look on the shelf, hence the conclusion that organic produce doesn’t look as nice a conventionally grown produce.

10 Appearance Cont. Studies actually show that there is no proven size difference.

11 Taste of Organic Food vs. Conventional Food

12 Taste Surprisingly there is no real taste difference. The rule of thumb is that the best tasting fruit or vegetables is always the freshest. When buying fruits and veggies always try to buy fresh, remember your helping a local farm.

13 Nutrition of Organic food vs. Conventional Food

14 Nutrition Organic products tend to be healthier than conventional products. Organic foods are almost guaranteed not to have high- fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oil. The reason that I say almost is because foods considered organic only have to have 70% organic ingredients. Always check the label even if it says organic on the box or bag.

15 Fruits and Veggies

16 Buying organic fruits and vegetables is important. One important thing to know when purchasing organic produce is that not all produce has to be bought organic, and on the flip side there are some fruits that are very important to buy organic. Fruits and Veggies with hard skins or peals that you do not eat don’t have to be bought organic – Fruits like oranges, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi and more are not necessary to purchase organic

17 Fruits and Veggies Cont. – There are also some veggies that are not as important to purchase organic, veggies like avocado, zucchini (if not eatting skin), squash, and asparagus (it has a natural compound that braks down the pesticides) and more. On the other hand there are some fruits and veggies that are essential to buy organic – Fruits like grapes, apples, pears and strawberries are important o buy organic. If they are not available buying local fruit or fruit grown in the US is better than buying grown in places like Chile and Mexico because they do not have pesticide regulations and tend to over use the pesticides. – Some veggies include corn, and leafy greens like lettuce and kale.

19 Buying organic grains is not important as buying organic produce because grains such as bread and cereal are processed so much that the amount of pesticides left on the product is very little if any but, the bread may have chemicals in it. If you are able to buy organic grains then it will not hurt. When buying organic grains there will be less of a chance it will contain high- fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils.

20 Grains Cont. These fats are bad for your health, along with the amount of sugar that can be found in cereals. When buying grains here is some things to look for. – Check to make sure it has at least three grams of fiber in on serving – Check to make sure there are no chemicals or bad ingredients – Check to make sure it has less than 10 grams of sugar per serving (mainly cereals)

21 Meat

22 When buying meat it is always best to buy organic or hormone free, antibiotic free and free range. Some conventional farms do not dive their cows, chickens, lambs, pigs and other animals antibiotics or hormones, but most do. Many conventional farmers find it easier to manage animals with antibiotics and hormones. If a cow has been given antibiotics and then you eat the meat you could be consuming some of the antibiotics left in the meat.

23 Meat cont. Hormones are given to the animals to make them big and fat fast. Again, consuming meat with hormones in it could affect your health.

24 Sugars and Syrups

25 You can find organic treats at your grocery store, but most of the time if you rally want to get organic sweets you have to go tho the health food store. Buying organic sweets is not necessary. You will find yourself running around to find ones you like. The rule of thumb with sweets is don’t look at the label. Syrups such as brown rice syrup, agave nectar and maple syrup can be found at your local grocery store.

26 Sugars and Syrups Cont. These syrups are great for using in baking, on top of pancakes, and on oatmeal. Remember though they still have sugar in them so use them in moderation.

27 “All Natural”

28 “All Natural” is a marketing scam. Although it says it’s all natural doesn’t really mean anything. Always check the label just to be sure.

29 Chemicals

30 Chemicals are bad for the environment and your health. Chemically food lurk everywhere. Any food that has artificial coloring or flavoring has chemicals. Also, some oils and fats are chemical fats. The reason that chemicals are everywhere is because it make it cheaper to make the food. Try and stay clear of any chemicals.

31 Fresh vs. Organic

32 Buying fresh and locally can sometimes be better than buying organic. When buying organic produce it may have been picked weeks ago because it came form somewhere far from you. Fresh however refers to the food that is grown right by you. When buying fresh or local you are supporting the local farms in your area.

33 Check The Label

34 Just because a food is organic check the label. You may find it is high in sugar or low in fiber, don’t be tricked, check the label.
