1  Name 2 of the hominids we discussed last week.  Who was one of the named hominids we discussed?

2  Bell Ringer  Notes/Discussion – The First People  Experiencing life as a caveman with cave art  Venn Diagram – Comparing Life in the Stone Age to Life Today Objective: To compare and contrast life in the Stone Age to modern life.

3  The first humans and their ancestors lived during the Stone Age.  There are three periods of the Stone Age:  Paleolithic  Mesolithic  Neolithic

4  Paleolithic—means Old Stone Age  People:  Were hunter-gatherers  Moved around a lot  Used fire  Language  Religion  Invented stone tools

5  Mesolithic—means Middle Stone Age  People:  Were hunter-gatherers  Moved around a lot  Used dogs and goats  Invented pottery, bow and arrow

6  Neolithic—means New Stone Age  People:  Began farming (agriculture)  Settled in villages  Invented wheel, plow, calendar

7  Earliest tools found in East Africa  About 2.6 million years old  Each stone was hit with another to create a sharp edge.  Scientists think these first tools were used mostly to cut and grind food.

8  People learned how to attach wooden handles to tools.  Because they no longer had to stand next to the animals they were hunting, people were able to kill larger animals from a distance.

9  The most important thing to Stone Age people was getting food  No food means you starve to death!  Tools helped them to get food easily

10  Stone Age people created cave paintings to show how important hunting was to them  Some caves found have had hundreds of paintings  Colors used most often were brown, yellow/tan, dark red, and black.

11  Around 1940, some kids were playing in a field in Lascaux, France.  They came across an entrance to a cave that had been covered with tree roots  The walls inside the cave were covered with these paintings made by Stone Age people…15,000 years ago!

19 COMPARE AND CONTRAST  Create a Venn diagram on a sheet of paper  Compare life in the Stone Age to life in 2014  You must have at least 4 facts in each part of the Venn diagram

20  Put facts about the first subject (Life in the Stone Age) on one side of the Venn diagram  Put facts about the second subject (Life in 2013) on the other side of the Venn diagram  Put facts that both subjects have in common in the middle of the Venn diagram
