2 ~Vocabulary~ Consciousness - our awareness of ourselves and our environment Levels of consciousness:  Conscious Level - the information about yourself and your environment you are currently aware of.  Nonconscious Level – body processes controlled by your mind that we are not usually aware of.  Preconscious Level – information about yourself or your environment that you are not currently thinking about but could be  Subconscious Level - information that we are not consciously aware of but we know must exist due to behavior.  Unconscious Level – Psychoanalytic psychologists believe some events and feelings are inacceptable to our unconscious mind Cognitive neuroscience – the study of the brain activity linked with cognition Dual processing – the principle that information is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tracks Selective attention – the focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus Intentional blindness – failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere Change blindness - failing to notice changes in the environment

3 ~Vocabulary continued~ Sleep – periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness Circadian rhythm - biological clock ; regular body rhythms Sleep disorders:  Insomnia – reoccurring problems in falling or staying asleep  Narcolepsy – a sleep disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks, the sufferer may lapse into REM sleep, often at inopportune times  Sleep apnea – temporary cessations of breathing during sleep, and repeated momentary awakenings  Night terrors – high arousal and appearance of being terrified Sleep stages:  1 st stage - Stage 1 can be considered a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. During this stage the brain produces theta waves, very slow brain waves, this stages lasts about 5-10 minutes.  2 nd stage – the brain starts to produce of rapid, brain waves in which are called sleep spindles. The body temperature goes down and heart rate slows down.  3 rd stage – stage 3 is the transitional period from light sleep to very deep sleep during this stage your brain produces delta waves which are slow.  4 th stage – is commonly called the delta stage because this is when the most delta waves are produced. This stage is a deep sleep that last 30 minutes  5 th stage – this stages is known as the REM stage, REM is rapid eye movement, during this time is when you have your most vivid dreams, also your muscles are relaxed, but other body systems are active

4 ~Vocabulary continued~ REM rebound – the tendency for REM sleep to increase following REM sleep deprivation Dream – a sequence of images emotions and thoughts passing through a sleeping person's mind Manifest content – remembered story line of a dream Latent Content – underlying meaning of a dream Hypnosis – s social interaction in which one person suggests to another that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts of behaviors which spontaneously occur Hallucinations – false sensory experiences Posthypnotic suggestion – a suggestion made during hypnosis to be called out after the subject is no longer hypnotized Dissociation – a split in consciousness, which allows some thoughts and behaviors to occur simultaneously Psychoactive drug – a chemical substance that alters perceptions and moods Tolerance – a change that produces a need for more of the same drug in order to achieve the same effect
