Collecting Data

Basic Simple Data Collection STEP ONE Decide what you want to measure Behaviors, Conditions, Simple Tally, etc.

STEP TWO: Determine how you will design your data collection Classroom observations Point sheets Parent report Teacher report Student self report Others

STEP THREE: Gather baseline data. Make sure you gather enough to show a trend. Decide how to represent data Bar graph, line graph, spreadsheet, numbers……

STEP FOUR: Implement Planned Intervention. Who is going to do what how often? What is the change you are hoping to accomplish? Conduct intervention for a long enough period of time.

STEP FIVE: Re-gather Data Use same method as when baseline was established Re-chart and Compare Data

Step Six: Draw Conclusions about success of intervention Share results With team With student/family Make a formal decision about changes, continuation of, or halting intervention. Don’t leave it in limbo.

Example: A teacher asked a family to consider medications. The family insisted that there was no problem. Teacher requested help convincing the family that the student may benefit from medication evaluation. The teacher was genuinely of the opinion that the student could not stop himself from making verbal and behavioral outbursts, and believed that he may benefit from medication. The student regularly cried and told her that he didn’t like himself when he blurted out, and literally begged her for her help to make him stop. Despite this, the family maintained that there was no problem.

Step One: Determine what to measure.

Step Two: Determine Design Classroom Observations by Social Worker

Step Three: Gather Baseline Data and Decide How to Represent It 1.5 Hour Classroom Observation was conducted.

Step Three Cont.
