3 WHY OFF-CAMPUS ? Enhance Essential and Workplace skills Connect school with work Find career interests Earn a positive reference from an employer Possible contacts for future employment Earn credits

4 Work Experience Work Experience 15, 25, 35 Student /work experience coordinator/employer set up a program Work may be paid or unpaid Supervisor and student discuss duties and safety considerations Employer, student, parent and school division sign a contract Evaluations completed by employer and Work Experience coordinator Students may earn up to 30 credits while in high school (only 15 may count toward a high school diploma) CTR 1010 (Job Preparation) required (HCS 3000 in 2011)

5 GREEN CERTIFICATE The Green Certificate program is a collaborative venture of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, and Alberta Learning. Most students live on family farm Nine Strands: Cow-Calf, Dairy, Feed Lot Beef, Field Crop, Swine, Sheep, Irrigated Crop Bee Keeping and Equine Green Certificate students make arrangements with a trainer, often parents Orientation with student, trainer and Green Certificate representative Students are tested three times a year at a testing centre 16 credits in Green Certificate (all 30 level) Each school/division determines how the fee will be paid. AGR 3000 required in 2011

6 Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) Collaboration between the Apprenticeship and Industry Training and the Department of Education Apprenticeship program for high school students. Students must be working toward a High School Diploma More than 50 trades in Alberta that require apprenticeship training Steps: - Choose a trade - Find an Employer - Work with Off-Campus coordinator to set up program - Apply Off-Campus coordinator and employer complete evaluations RAP students may work off up to 1000 hours of first year apprenticeship and earn up to 40 credits

7 Summer Health Internship Coordinated by Careers the Next Generation Supports career exploration choices in health care Students have the opportunity to be involved in health care while in school Students work in Health Care facilities for six weeks in the summer Most in Grade 11, a few after Grade 12 Students earn credits, most are paid an honorarium

8 What do employers really want? They want workers who: Show up to work on the days and times they are asssigned Work the best they can on all tasks Ask questions Find things to do when they are finished assigned work Be grateful
