DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Matter States of Matter Changing States

Changing States – The Big Ideas Melting is the change of state from solid to liquid caused by adding heat. Vaporizing is the change of state from liquid to gas caused by adding heat. Boiling is the formation of gas bubbles in a liquid as it is heated. Freezing is the change of state from liquid to solid caused by losing heat. Condensing is change of state from gas to liquid caused by losing heat. The mass of matter remains the same during heating or cooling, although some may escape during vaporization.

Changing States – Prior Knowledge Students have been interacting with matter since birth. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, What’s the Matter, to review changing states. It will be helpful if students review what happens to water:What’s the Matter –when placed on a hot stove. –when placed in the refrigerator. –when placed in the freezer.

Changing States – Common Misconceptions Gases are not matter because most are invisible. –Reality: Gases are matter, which means they have mass and occupy space. Gases can be detected or measured in other ways, i.e. sulfur dioxide smells like rotten eggs. Expansion of matter is due to the expansion of particles rather than the increased particle spacing. – Reality: When matter is heated it expands due to the vibrating of molecules, loosening bonds, and increasing space between adjacent atoms or molecules.

Changing States – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Changing States. Exploration: Changing StatesChanging States Reading Passage: No Loss, No GainNo Loss, No Gain Video: Adding Energy: MeltingAdding Energy: Melting Video: Melting, Freezing, and BoilingMelting, Freezing, and Boiling Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Changing States – Instructional Ideas Have each student or pairs of students complete the Exploration: Changing States.Changing States –Students should define each of the terms: condensing, freezing, vaporization, and melting. –Students can also write what steps they would take to reverse the melting of the solid cubes in order to return the liquid back into solid cubes.

Changing States – Instructional Ideas The students will write a memo to a meteorologist –The memo should include an explanation of how the changing states of matter can be found throughout the water cycle.

State Standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Changing States, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
