If you chose B, you are correct! Mountains are formed at CONVERGING boundaries, when plates collide with each other.

If you chose D, you are correct! These two plates are pushing toward each other. With enough force, the plates will jolt into a new position, causing the earth to shake violently at this fault line.

Which event most likely caused this land formation? A. Two crustal plates sliding past each other B. Rivers depositing large amounts of sand C. Hot liquid rock moving to the surface D.Sediments being dropped by the wind If you chose C, you are correct! This is a volcano that was formed by magma oozing to the top, which eventually cooled and created land.

Climate

Climate is the normal pattern of weather in an area over many years. There are 3 main climate zones (they are based on temperature and precipitation amounts). 1.Tropical Climates- near the Equator; warm and rainy. 2.Temperate- Some have mild summer and winters while others have warm summers with rain and cold winters with snow. 3.Polar- Near the North and South poles; always cold and snowy.

What’s our climate like here in Murfreesboro? Murfreesboro

What’s the climate like in Orlando, Florida? Orlando

If you’ve been to the beach, you know… That it’s windy! There is usually a cool breeze during the day. Where does the breeze come from? That it’s hot during the day, in the sun! – Have you ever walked on the hot sand, and felt like your feet were burning because the sand was so hot?

This is because land heats up faster than the sea. What do we know about hot air? Where does it go? UP! HEAT RISES! This upward movement of the hot air at the beach is what creates wind.

During the day, heat from the land rises. Cool air over the water moves in to the shore, replacing the hot air. This cycle of warm and cool air creates wind- also known as a SEA BREEZE.

Sea Breeze A sea breeze flows from the water toward the land. Sea breezes occur during the day ONLY.

If sea breezes occur during the day, what happens at night? Have you ever walked on the beach at night and stared out at the ocean? Did you feel the wind at your back? This happens because the air moves in the opposite way at night. This creates a LAND BREEZE.

Land cools faster then water (just as it heats faster then water). The cool air from the land is blown out to sea.

Land Breeze Land cools faster than water, so the air over the water is warmer. Warm air rises over the water, and cool air moves from land to water.

Land and Sea Breeze Animation With a partner, pair up and write an explanation of the animation in your journal. Also, draw a picture of a land and sea breeze, complete with arrows.

Does your picture look like this? Make sure your arrows are moving in the correct direction!

Something to think about… On a warm summer day, would you expect to be cooler sitting at the beach or 10 miles inland? The temp above the land at both locations would probably be the same. The temperature above the water would be cooler. That would cause a sea breeze. You would be cooler at the beach because you would feel the sea breeze.

Why are cities near the ocean often warmer in the winter than in cities farther inland? Colorado Springs, CO Norfolk, VA Average Winter Temperature for Colorado Springs is 27.2 Average Winter Temperature for Norfolk is 40.7 SIMILAR LATITUDE

The sea takes longer to cool down & heat up than land. During the summer (the sea and the air above it is cooler than the land), the cool sea air keeps the coastal areas cool. But during the winter, the warm air above the sea is blown to shore by sea breezes which keep the land warmer. (Winds going over water can take the warmer air in winter and push it over that nearby land, thus warming the associated land.)

If you chose F, you are correct! We know that land cools and heats faster then the ocean. In winter, the air above the water is warmer than the land/ air above the land.

If you chose F, you are correct! A sea breeze flows from the sea; Cool air flows from the sea to the land!

Notes: Climate: the normal pattern of weather in an area over many years. Sea Breeze: Flows from the water toward the land during the day. Land Breeze: Flows from the land to the water at night. DRAW A PICTURE! Make sure you have a picture and an explanation in your journal!!
