2 Push and Pull Factors of Colonization

3  During the early establishment of the 13 colonies, various religious and ethnic group began to settle America.  The factors that drove them here can be described as either ‘push’ or ‘pull’  Push: forced people into an unwanted migration  NEGATIVE  Pull: actions or characteristics that motivate people to migrate to a new area  POSITIVE

5 Pull Factors of Colonization Pull Factors (Positive) Economic Opportunity FreedomAdventureOpportunity

6 Push v Pull  Decide if the following groups were pushed or pulled to colonial America

7 English  England gets word of the Spanish success in the New World  British sensed a need to expand her empire

8 Spanish  Spanish were enthralled with the sense of adventure  Their explorations were motivated by God, gold and glory  Sought to obtain new spices

9 Irish  Left Ireland in the wake of religious conflicts.  Irish lacked a sense of political autonomy.  Ireland was in the midst of poor economic conditions.

10 Scottish  Were educated/skilled workers  Majority of migration were funded through colonist  Scottish immigrants could obtain freedom through servitude

11 Germans  Were being heavily taxed by the royal government  Germans followed the strict code/law of primogeniture  Wars were plaguing the country (1608-1749)

12 Catholics  Seeking shelter from religious persecution in England  Catholics were the extreme minority in England, as the Church of England was the governing church  Receive information concerning the ability to seek refuge in the colony of Maryland

13 African Slaves  Began to arrive in America due to the rapid loss of Native American workers as a result of European diseases (Columbian Exchange)  Virginia had a strong need to increase their labor force due in cultivating their tobacco plantations

14 Dutch (Netherlands)  Were seeking to expand their commercial enterprise globally  Felt a strong need to expand the Dutch Culture beyond the Europe and the West Indies

15 Puritans  Looked to purify/reform the Church of England  Wanted to separate from the Church of England and heard of the success Jamestown

16 Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson  Faced religious persecution in Puritan New England  Were beaten and imprisoned for adhering to the Puritan religion  Sought to settle somewhere that allowed for religious tolerance  Established the colony of Rhode Island

17 Quakers  Were instructed to adhere to strict guidelines established by the Puritans in New England  Sought the tolerance of religious freedom  Followed William Penn and established colony of Pennsylvania

18 Georgia (Colony)  Allowed a fresh start to imprisoned Englanders (debt)  British saw the need to fortify its defense within the southern border of the 13 colonies  French presence in Louisiana and Spanish presence in Florida called for a need for protection

19 Religion in the 13 Colonies  You will be select a religious group among the 13 colonies and be required to provide the following information on computer paper  Read the strip pertaining to the group you were assigned  Identify which topic you have (top left)  Summarize your religious group in your own words (top right)  Draw a picture that represents what was stated in your selected piece (bottom)  Present your topic to the class
