2 The Alamo as it Looks Today The Alamo is in San Antonio, Texas. In 1836 it was the Texan’s fort against Santa Anna and the Mexican army.

3 James Bowie Jim Bowie was the commander of the volunteers at the Alamo. He became ill and had to give up his command to Travis.

4 William B. Travis Travis was a lawyer who came to Texas just before the Texas Revolution. He was the commander of the Texan forces at the Alamo.

5 David Crockett Crockett was a former wilderness adventurer. He had wrestled bears, fought in the Creek Indian War, served as a congressman before coming to the Alamo.

6 The 1824 Flag One reason the Texans were seeking their independence was because Santa Anna had revoked the constitution of 1824. The Texans flew this flag over the Alamo to deliver a message to Santa Anna.

7 Santa Anna Santa Anna was the Mexican dictator and the leader of the Mexican forces. He thought the Battle of the Alamo was just a small affair!

8 Leaders of the Alamo Almeron Dickenson, Davy Crockett, William Travis, Jim Bowie, and James Bonham.

9 Fall of the Alamo After 13 days the Alamo finally fell. Santa Anna ordered all Texans to be put to the sword.

10 The Final Assault The final assault lasted only a short time. When the sun came up that last day all the Texans were dead.

11 Survivors of the Battle Some of the survivors included Sussana Dickenson and her daughter Angelina, Ana Esparza, her son Enrique and the rest of her children, and Travis’ slave Joe.

13 Cannons The Texans had 19 cannons scattered throughout the Alamo.

14 Battle of San Jaciento Two months after the Alamo the Texan army shouted “Remember the Alamo” as they surprised Santa Anna’s troops at San Jaciento. After the battle Santa Anna surrendered to Sam Houston and Texas was free.
