English 10 Week 8 Debates and Argumentative Writing

English 10 DO NOW: 3/3/14  Gather your DO NOWs from Week 7. Make sure they have no teeth, that each day has its date and the words DO NOW. If more than one page, staple all together, make sure name is on every page even if stapled.  Turn in DO NOWs to US MAIL BASKET  Have desk cleared. You will need a half sheet of loose leaf for this quiz  People sitting quietly and waiting will get dippied

Success Today Means 3/3  You demonstrate your understanding of debate by completing the quiz.  Your debate group practices the debate from start to finish while timing each other. Other members will act as the opponents so the team can also practice answering rebuttal questions. HOWEVER YOU PRACTICE TODAY WILL PROBABLY REFLECT HOW YOU PRESENT TOMORROW!!

8 th pd DO NOW: 3/3/14  Reflect on the last Socratic Seminar (or the last one you were present for).  Name one thing you think we did well as a class.  Name one thing you think we could do better in our seminar today? Have your tally sheets from the last seminar Friday out on your desk.

English 10 DO NOW: 3/4/14  What can you do as an audience to make it as easy for the debaters to present? In other words, what behaviors of the audience help the speaker?

Success Today Means 3/4  You demonstrate your ability to listen actively by SLANTing.  You demonstrate your ability to process and analyze an argument by posing questions to the teams after the debate.  You critique the debate and record your observations in the peer review rubric.

8 th pd DO NOW: 3/4/14  If you had to divide up an essay into its three main parts, what would they be?

Success Today Means3/4  You can name the three main parts of an essay.  You demonstrate what the body of an essay looks like by grouping your arguments for your topic into three main reasons.  You revise or finish your outline of the body paragraphs. (You may decide to use your original, but after the fishbowl Socratic seminars, hopefully you have even better reasons to use)

English 10 DO NOW 3/5/14  Write one thing that you think went well yesterday  Write one thing you think we can do better today. Do not name names, just ideas.

Success Today Means 3/5  You demonstrate your ability to listen actively by SLANTing.  You demonstrate your ability to process and analyze an argument by posing questions to the teams after the debate.  You critique the debate and record your observations in the peer review rubric.

8 th pd DO NOW: 3/5/14 Pick the best topic sentence for this body paragraph: ________________________________________. First of all, we need money to repair old roads and build new roads. We also need more to pay teachers’ salaries and to pay for services such as trash collection. Finally, more tax money is needed to give financial help to the poor citizens of the city. It is clear that the city will have serious problems if taxes are not raised soon. a) We should raise city taxes. b) City taxes are too high. c) City taxes pay for new roads.

How about this one? ___________________________________________. One thing you must consider is the quality of the university’s educational program. You also need to think about the school’s size and location. Finally, you must be sure to consider the university’s tuition to make sure you can afford to go to school there. a) It is expensive to attend a university in the United States. b) There are several factors to consider when you choose a university to attend. c) You should consider getting a good education.

Read the supporting details and design your own topic sentence for this body paragraph _________________________________________ ____.For one thing, I don’t like they style of the uniform. The navy blazer and plaid skirt are too conservative for me. Secondly, the uniform isn’t comfortable. I prefer to wear baggy pants and a sweater instead of a skirt and a jacket. Finally, I want the freedom to express my individuality through my style of dressing….

Success Today Means 35/14  You use your outline of main ideas and evidence to build full sentence body paragraphs that have topic sentences, transitions, supporting details and a conclusion sentence. (We will work on concluding sentences tomorrow if need be)

English 10 DO NOW: 3/6/14  Have out paper to take notes with. Your debate info if you are presenting and sit quietly.

Success Today Means 3/6  You demonstrate your ability to listen actively by SLANTing.  You demonstrate your ability to process and analyze an argument by posing questions to the teams after the debate.  You critique the debate and record your observations in the peer review rubric.

8 th pd DO NOW: 3/6/14  Yesterday we discussed the parts that are in a body paragraph. Can you name the four parts I mentioned in class? Some are probably more familiar than others.

Success Today Means 3/6/14  You practice working with topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding (aka clincher) sentences.  You demonstrate your understanding of these parts by revising/writing your own body paragraphs

1. Debating has always been an important part of my life. For example, when I was younger, I used to argue with everyone, even the mailman. As a matter of fact, I still argue with him! In general, I have always found it easy to talk my way in and out of situations. For example, I have won many debating contests. Therefore, I have no trouble getting up in front of large groups of people and debating for hours! Some people would get nervous. Debating about things that are important to me is what I enjoy because I feel very strongly about my opinions. If it hadn’t been for the mailman, I might not have discovered debating. 2. 20 English 10 DO NOW 3/7/14  Gather any Do Nows you have. Turn them in to the US MAIL BOX.  Take a handout from the US MAIL BASKET  Read the lyrics  Be cool.

Success Today Means 3/7/14  You understand the parts of the essay as evident in your lyrics worksheet.  You revisit the body part of your essay by updating your outline. You may still have the original from before the debate, but hopefully you are wiser after the debate. With this new knowledge redesign your three body paragraphs. You may have better main reasons, more details, but hopefully evidence from a credible source.

8 th pd DO NOW: 3/7/14 Write a Clincher Sentence for this body paragraph. Pay attention to the Topic Sentence (usually the first sentence in a body paragraph). The Clincher should relate to the Topic Sentence- remember our hamburger metaphor? Topic Sentence and Clincher are the buns. There are many reasons why I like wearing a uniform to school. First of all, it saves time. I don’t have to spend time picking out my clothes every morning. Wearing a uniform also saves money. It’s cheaper to purchase a new uniform than to go out and buy lots of school clothes. In addition, I don’t have the pressure of keeping up with the latest styles. Most importantly, wearing a school uniform gives me a sense that I belong. I really think that it adds to the feeling of school spirit and community. _____________________________________________.
