1. Each tribe spoke a different language. But they also used sign language.

2. We have learned a lot about their history because of their art.

4. They didn’t have an alphabet like ours. They used pictures (not letters) to tell stories.

5. They painted stories on teepees, animal skins, and rocks.

6. They also scratched stories onto rocks called petroglyphs. We can still see these story rocks all over America.

7. The pictures tell us what was important in their lives. What do you think these pictures are telling us? We see people dressed up like animals with bows and arrows. We see deer, bighorn sheep, and buffalo.

8. Did you guess that hunting was important? Why do you think hunting was so important?

9. There are also pictures in the rocks that we don’t understand. It is left up to your own imagination to guess. What do you think these rock carvings could be about ?

10. Native Americans still live all over America today. They are very proud of their history.

11. To teach others how they lived long ago, they have parades and perform Powwows.
