1 Course Expectations AP Language Heritage High School Mrs. Hurley

2 Course Description College level course Studies the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing

3 Learner Objectives Analyze and interpret samples of good writing, identifying and explaining an author’s use of rhetorical strategies and techniques Apply effective strategies and techniques in their own writing Create and sustain arguments based on reading, research, and/or personal experience Demonstrate understanding and mastery of standard written English as well as stylistic maturity in their own writings

4 Write in a variety of genres and contexts, both formal and informal, employing appropriate conventions Produce expository and argumentative compositions that introduce a complex central idea and develop it with appropriate, specific evidence, cogent explanations, and clear transitions Move effectively through the stages of the writing process, with careful attention to inquiry and research, drafting, revising, editing, and review.

5 Materials The Longman Reader- Ninth Edition Access to a credible Literary Terms Resource (online and/or print)‏ As a college course, AP students are expected to purchase their books.

6 Grading All students will be evaluated in the following categories based on a point system: Essays written outside of class 200 points Essays written in class 100 points Participation 50 points Homework 50/25 points Quizzes 50/25 points 9 point scale used for all writing!

7 Homework/Make-up Work Policy Rewrites for in-class timed essays and excused make-up essays will be held in the library. Students need to meet all deadlines. For those rare exceptions, students will need to seek instructor approval before due date. Students are required to do all homework. However, if homework is not submitted on the due date it must still be completed with a 50% reduction of score earned. When a student has an unexcused absence in the class, he should still complete the worked missed. It will be due one week from the absence with a 50% grade reduction based on the score earned. Scholastic dishonesty will result in no credit for the assignment.
