2 The Republican Party became the party dedicated to stopping the spread of slavery.

3 The Democratic party became the political party of the South before the Civil War.

4 The Whig party became extinct before the Civil War.

5 James Buchanan He was the President immediately before Abe Lincoln. (elected 1856) The only president born in Pennsylvania.

6 Dred Scott Slave who tried to sue for his freedom and lost.

7 Roger B. Taney Chief Justice who said that blacks “had no rights which a white man was bound to respect”.

8 The Northerners believed that popular sovereignty in Kansas and Nebraska violated the Missouri Compromise.

9 Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln wanted to focus on stopping the spread of slavery. Abraham Lincoln started in politics in Illinois.

10 Stephen Douglas Proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act so he could get his Chicago Railroad. Also had a series of debates with Abe Lincoln.

11 Abraham Lincoln was not completely committed to the idea of racial equality. He believed that they were not necessarily the political or social equals of whites.
