DESIGN AND TECHNOLGY FOOD RESISTANT MATERIALS GRAPHIC PRODUCTS ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS KS4 OPTIONS

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY YOU HAVE 4 OPTIONS: OPTION 1 : ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS OPTION 2 : FOOD TECHNOLOGY OPTION 3 : GRAPHIC PRODUCTS OPTION 4 : RESISTANT MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY So what is the Difference then?

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Well, they are all about designing and making. They all involve a coursework project that accounts for a massive 60% (25% in Electronics)of your GCSE grade. You will need to produce a portfolio of design solutions for them all. The difference is the components, materials or ingredients that are studied.

What is Electronics? Electronics is about understanding how electrical products work. It involves learning about electrical safety, simple circuit designs, electronic components and electrical systems. The development of electronics has allowed the miniaturisation of products. Which products do you use that contain electronics?

What does the course involve? You will study GCSE Electronics for 2 years. During this time you will develop your skills and knowledge of electrical systems, resulting in you being able to design and make your own small electrical products.

How will I be assessed? 75% written exam 25% Controlled assessment (In which you will produce a product and a written report.) You will design and make products such as: Alarm systems, Electronic hand-held games, Audio amplifiers, Radios.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY Amongst other things; You will learn about the nutritional properties of food. You will learn to use research to help you to design your own food products. You will learn how to prepare and cook dishes. You will analyse existing food products. You will learn about small and large scale food production. You will design and make your own original product.

Do you want to be the next celebrity chef? There are some fantastic opportunities for careers within the food industries whether you are interested in becoming a chef, a cook, a food technologist or work in the food industry. You might just be confident in you practical skills and enjoy cooking. Food is a really exciting subject and it’s great fun. Even if you don’t intend on pursuing a career in food you will learn skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

GRAPHIC PRODUCTS Amongst other things; You will learn how to use a range of professional standard computer software to design surface graphics and nets for packaging. You will use CAD/CAM to manufacture prototype products. You will develop traditional hand drawing and modeling skills. You will learn about how professional designers work. You will learn about how designers work closely with the print industries. You will design and make a 3 dimensional piece of packaging or model of a product.

Do you want to be the next famous designer? Opportunities for careers within the graphic products industries include Packaging design Graphic design Web design Product design Architecture Interior design Fashion industries Photography Computer Games Designer

RESISTANT MATERIALS Amongst other things; You will learn how to use a range of tools and machinery to make items out of wood, metal, plastic and composite materials You will use CAD/CAM to manufacture products. You will develop traditional hand drawing and modeling skills. You will learn about how professional product designers work. You will learn about how product designers work closely with the manufacturing industries. You will design and make a range of items that might include, furniture, storage units and other small manufactured products.

Do you want to be a product designer a craftsman, engineer or a tradesman? A resistant materials qualification can open the door to many career opportunities. Resistant materials knowledge will help you in numerous careers. These include: Product design, Jewellery design Engineering Furniture design and manufacture Interior design Architecture The building trades.

WILL I BE USING COMPUTERS? YES In all of the technology courses you will use ICT (CAD/CAM) to help you with designing, making and research BUT this will be mixed with traditional designing and making skills, done by hand. If you choose to study GRAPHIC PRODUCTS a large proportion of your work will be done using professional standard computer design software.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY THANK YOU FOR LISTENING We look forward to seeing you next year!
