2 Early Revolts 1850’s – 1870’s –Indians distrustful of East India Company –British disrespect Indian leaders and citizens Revolts, though well believed in, not well organized 1876 – British begin to rule India directly

3 Direct British Rule India ruled by a Viceroy (Governor acting through the Monarchy)

4 The Good and Bad of British Rule Brings order and stability Fairly honest Created a new education system Transportation and postal system improved Education system only educated highest ten percent of population British made goods destroyed local businesses Farmers growing less food resulting in starvation

5 Indian Nationalism Indian National Congress –Not calling for immediate independence but reforms –Problem – Hindu vs. Muslim Indians 1915 – Mohandas Gandhi practices peaceful resistance to British Rule 1947 – India granted their independence from Great Britain 1948 – Gandhi is assassinated
