3. Your Job Each team will create a design package to present to the Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Your presentation will include: –A–A monument –A–A dedication speech –A–A poem –A–A brochure

Follow the Drinking Gourd Think about these questions as you listen to the story: –What were some symbols slaves used along the Underground Railroad? –What words describe the slaves who traveled along the Underground Railroad? –Why was the Underground Railroad so important? –How do you think free slaves felt once they reached Canada? –Why should we honor those who took part and helped along the Underground Railroad?

5. Designer –The designer completes drawings of the monument using ideas from the team. The Designer will act as the scribe when the team completes the “Design Choices” chart. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

6. Editor –The job of the Editor is to lead the team in creating a brochure that goes along with your monument. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

7. Historian –The historian chooses: the monument’s location what people, if any, are shown on the monument provides an explanation of the monument. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

8. Publicist –The publicist: creates a name for the monument writes the dedication speech to be read the day the monument is unveiled. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

9. Art Specialist –The art specialist writes a poem about the Underground Railroad and your group’s monument. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

10. Fabricator –All team members will work together to build the team’s monument. Team Jobs and Responsibilities

13. The Process 1.As a group review the “Thinking About the Underground Railroad” questions you completed in Lesson 1. 2.Brainstorm ideas: What would you like to see in your monument? What colors would it be? What size? What materials would be used? Who is shown in your monument? Will you use any symbols?

14. The Process 3.Look over the “Design Choices” chart. As a team decide on a final design and complete the chart. 4.As a team assign a job to each team member: Designer Editor Historian Art Specialist Publicist

15. The Process 5. Each team member should begin working on their assigned responsibilities. 6. Once everyone has competed their individual work, your team may begin constructing your monument.
