2. The Roman Republic and You : A bit more Formal

3. In 509 B.C., following the rape of Lucretia, Brutus ran the royal family out of Rome.

4. After that, the word rex became a “ bad word ” in Rome because of what it represented.

5. Brutus then replaced the monarchy with a new form of government called the “ republic ”.

6. The monarchy was replaced with a bunch of different offices and ranks. The Romans called it “The Race of Honors” Ambitious men started at the bottom and clawed their way to the top.

7. What is a republic? A publicly run government with a hierarchy of elected officials

9. At age 30 a man could run for QUAESTOR. The number of quaestores grew from 4 to 20 over time Quaestores travelled with armies and paid the troops, similar to a modern quartermaster Quaestor

10. At age 36 a man could run for Aedile. The number of aediles was always 4. aediles had many obligations, but they could make a splash by putting on games and festivals Aediles (optional)

11. Praetors and Consuls had imperium, which meant the could lead armies. This was a very special right, and gave the man honor, glory, and sometimes $$$ Imperium

12. The symbol of imperium were the FASCES. These were carried by special attendants called LICTORS Fasces / Lictors

13. At age 39 a man could run for PRAETOR. The number of praetores grew from 2 to 16. Praetors were primarily judges, but could lead armies too. Praetor (imperium, 6 lictors)

14. At age 40 a man could run for Consul. The number of consules was always TWO. Consules were military leaders, and could propose laws and run the whole state. Consul (imperium, 12 lictors)

15. If you’d been a consul, you could become a censor, but they were only selected once every 5 years. Censores took the census, and decided who was worthy!!!! Censor

16. EMERGENCY!! EMERGENCY!!! Dictator didn’t mean something bad. If there were a state emergency, the Senate could select a temporary dictator..... Dictator (imperium, 24 lictors)

17. So what kinds of skills and abilities would a potential Roman politician need?
