1 Warm-up 9/10 Be sure to pick up the four sheets from the front before going to your seat. Your warm-up for today is “Is it a Plant’’. Follow the instructions on the warm-up sheet. Do NOT Write on this sheet.

2 Today we will… Warm-up: “What is a plant?”
Parts of a plant Scavenger Hunt Introduction to plants notes Plant parts foldable Plant parts independent practice Exit Ticket

3 Parts of a plant Scavenger Hunt Instructions
Take out a sheet of paper and label it Plant Scavenger Hunt. Number your paper 1-18 Search around the room to find all of the fact cards. Once you find the fact card, find the corresponding question and answer the question. Use your own sheet of paper. Do not write on my sheet!!! There are 18 questions and 18 fact cards.

4 Parts of a Plant Notes Unit 2

5 Essential Questions that we will answer:
What is a plant? What do plants need to survive? What are the parts of a plant? How do plants carry out the STERNGRR processes?

6 Plants are multicellular organisms that carry out photosynthesis.
What is a plant? Plants are multicellular organisms that carry out photosynthesis. What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process by which plants absorb the sun’s energy and use it as food. What STERNGRR process does this describe? Nutrition What part of the plant do you think is responsible for photosynthesis? Introduce chloroplasts and chlorophyll

7 What do plants need to survive?
All living things grow and change. All living things need food, water, and air to live.

8 Plants must have these things to grow.
Sunlight Air Water Nutrients or minerals from the soil Why do you think plants need each of these things to survive? What do plants use each of these things for? Plants use sunlight to create food Plants use air for gas exchange. The air contains oxygen and carbon dioxide that is very important for photosynthesis and cellular respiration All cells need a constant supply of water. Plants must obtain and deliver water to all their cells. What structure do you think allows the plant to do this? Nutrients and minerals move throughout the plant just like water. These nutrients are really important for plant growth. What plants need to survive applying concepts activity. Have students understand what plants need to survive by allowing them to grow their own seedlings. You will need: potting soil, small cups, and seeds. Reloop the scientific method by having students experiment with the presence or absence of different variables to observe their effects on growth. Students can design an experiment to observe these changes.

9 This young plant that grows from a seed is called a seedling.
When a seed has sunlight, air, water, and nutrients it will begin to germinate, or start to grow. This young plant that grows from a seed is called a seedling.

10 Parts of a Plant Roots hold the plant in the soil and takes in water and nutrients from the soil. Roots anchor plants to the ground by holding the soil in place. Roots help the plant to stand upright and protect it from things like wind and rain. Roots transport nutrients and water to the rest of the plant

11 Parts of a Plant The stem holds up the plant and moves water and nutrients through it. Like a support system Stems can be as short as a few centimeters to very tall– the sizes vary based on how much support the stem is providing to the rest of the plant. It must be able to hold up the leaves and flowers (if any)

12 Parts of a Plant Leaves use light, air, water, and nutrients to make food for the plant. Leaves are where photosynthesis happens Leaves are often wide and flat. This is to allow for more sunlight to be absorbed. Plants absorb sunlight and make sugar during photosynthesis. Then during respiration plants

13 Parts of a Plant Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Flower 
Flowers are important for reproduction (STERNGRR Process). Plants reproduce sexually. Reloop types of reproduction (sexual and asexual). Pollen is analogous to the male sperm and it is spread so that plants can reproduce. How are flowers pollinated? Wind, Insects, Birds

14 Parts of a Seed Seed Coat Seed Leaf Stored Food Developing Plant

15 Seed Coat Seed Leaf The hard covering that
protects the seed is the ... Seed Coat The part that looks like a leaf inside each seed is the ... Seed Leaf

16 Seeds Seeds are formed in the center part of the flower or fruit.
Seeds come in many shapes and sizes. Plants grow from seeds. What are some ways that seeds might be scattered?

17 How Seeds Are Scattered
Planting Animals Water Wind

18 The Life Cycle of a Plant

19 Remember… When the small plant inside begins to grow, the seed germinates. The young plant that grows from a seed is the seedling. Seeds are scattered by planting, wind, water, and animals.

20 STERNGRR Processes in Plants

21 Leaves are responsible for Nutrition and Respiration
During photosynthesis, leaves absorb sunlight and make sugar that can be used later (Nutrition) Later, plants used the sugars produced during photosynthesis to make energy (Respiration)

22 Flowers are responsible for reproduction
Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Flower  Flowers are important for reproduction (STERNGRR Process). Plants reproduce sexually. Reloop types of reproduction (sexual and asexual). Pollen is analogous to the male sperm and it is spread so that plants can reproduce. How are flowers pollinated? Wind, Insects, Birds

23 Stem and Roots transport water and nutrients to the rest of the plant.

24 Seeds are responsible for growth and development

25 How a Seed Grows into a New Plant
The life of a plant begins as a seed. Once you plant and water a seed it begins to germinate. The root pushes through the seed coat. The seedling grows out of the ground. The stem and its leaves point to the sunlight. The leaves make its own food. Flowers begin to bloom and make seeds. New seeds are formed and scattered.

26 Life Cycle of a Plant

27 Plant Part Foldable Directions
Follow the instructions on the plant parts foldable sheet to complete the foldable.

28 Independent Practice Why do plants need sunlight and air to survive? Be specific and use the terms photosynthesis and nutrition in your answer. 2. How do flowers reproduce? Be specific and use the vocabulary terms flowers and pollination in your answer.

29 Independent Practice 3. Describe how seeds grow into new plants. Use complete sentences. 4. When seeds receive sunlight, water, air and nutrients they begin to grow into plants. What term is used to describe growth in plants?

30 Independent Practice 5. Why are roots important for plants?

31 Exit Ticket: Copy the question & answer the questions
Name the four major parts of a plant. What things do plants need to survive?

32 9/11 Warm-up: Copy the questions & answer the questions
What part of the plant is responsible for reproduction? Which parts of the plant are responsible for transporting water and nutrients through the plant? Synthesis- Transport- Stem and roots transport water and nutrients throughout the plant Excretion- Reproduction- flowers and seeds. The flowers make fruits that contain seeds. These seeds are how new plants are made. Flowers are also pollinated to make more flowers. Nutrition- Leaves. During photosynthesis, plants make sugar that will later be used during respiration to make energy Growth and Development Respiration- Leaves. Plants use the sugars produced during photosynthesis to make energy for the plant Regulation-
