1 FOUNDING IDEALS --Section 3 Essential Question: What effect did the colonial period have on American Rights & Government? SHAPING THE FIVE FOUNDING IDEALS

2 Magna Carta 1215 The Magna Carta began to create the right to due process of law. A government may NOT deprive a person of life, liberty or property -- Except according to LAW. It supported the principle of no taxation without representation The belief that people may only be taxed by the group they ELECTED to represent them. the king was not above the law helped establish a representative government.

3 English Bill of Rights 1689 The English Bill of Rights set forth individual rights The right to trial by jury The right to petition the government To be protected from cruel and unusual punishments. These became rights expected by colonists.

4 The House of Burgesses 1619 The House of Burgesses was America’s first representative colonial assembly and reflected a belief in self-government. White, landowning colonists could VOTE for men to represent them. Colonists believed the citizens in America could ONLY be taxed by the House of Burgesses, NOT PARLIAMENT.

5 The Albany Plan of Union 1754 An early model for an American government based on the idea of a confederation, or alliance of separate colonies. Motto: JOIN OR DIE Suggested the Alliance of Colonies could tax and raise an ARMY. PLAN WAS REJECTED???? —WHY-who might have feared the colonists having these powers?

6 Act of Religious Toleration 1649 Established the right of freedom of religion. However, it only gave this right to Christians.

7 ZENGER TRIAL 1735 Promoted the right to Freedom of the Press.

8 The Great Awakening- begins 1730’s The Great Awakening was a religious revival that helped shape American government, democracy and liberty by encouraging colonists to: question tradition question authority think for themselves
