2 Progressive Movement Worked to correct injustices in American life and restore economic opportunities –Protecting social welfare –Protecting moral improvement –Creating economic reform –Fostering efficiency

3 Social Welfare Social Gospel and settlement houses YMCA opened libraries and sports complexes Salvation Army created soup kitchens –Instructed people on the value of hard work and temperance Florence Kelly –Advocated for improving the lives of women and children –Helped to pass the Illinois Factory Act (1893) Prohibited child labor and limited women’s working hours

4 Moral Improvement Believed that morality would improve lives Prohibition –Banning of alcohol WCTU –Women’s Christian Temperance Union Spearheaded the crusade for prohibition Went into saloons singing and praying –245,000 members (1911) Largest women’s group Worked for schools, asylums, prisons, and women’s suffrage

6 Muckrakers Journalists who wrote about the underside of American life –Business and political machines –Industrial accidents –Child labor Called people to arms to fix these problems

7 Efficient Workers Oregon created a 10 hour work day Louis Brandeis argued that working longer hours was less efficient Scientific Management –Studies that were conducted to discover the most efficient working conditions

8 Efficient workers cont. Many court cases were brought before the court to discuss working hours –Court approved the 10 hour work day –Worker’s comp. initiated for injured workers –Employers required to pay death benefits

9 Election Reform Initiative –A bill originating from the people rather than the lawmakers Referendum –A vote on an initiative Recall –Enabled voters to remove an elected official by special election before their term was up 17 th Amendment –Allowed for direct election of senators
