4. Nobles, you have to pay the king a payment of fidelity. Keep two pieces and give three pieces (for every 5 pieces) to the king. 6. Feudal Candy In the early medival period, the rights of man were not a concern- survival was. The king now has A LOT of candy, while the peasants only have 4. Meager subsistence by peasants was preferable to being attacked by roaming bands of outlaws and armies. The king, while very powerful (lots of candy), could rarely secure power over a large area due to ambitious noblemen. Lords weren’t threatening by themselves but were formidable if they consolidated their strength. There was always distrust between kings and nobles over who controlled the kingdom. Questions to consider: – 1. What choice did the peasants have? – 2. How were serfs NOT slaves? – 3. Why did feudalism work? Why would people put up with it? – 4. What changes (if any) will be made to the king’s power?
