Did you know...? Using different coloured backgrounds can aid your reading. Pastel colours are especially good. Different people find different colours easier... Try the following samples...

Peach Pastel orange or peach is a very popular colour... BOLD typeface can also help...

Lilac As can certain fonts... Try Sans Serif fonts such as: – Comic Sans – Verdana –Arial – Tahoma – Century Gothic – Trebuchet

OpenDyslexic There is even a font designed to be easier to read for dyslexic students It is called OpenDyslexic You can download it for free, here: http://opendyslexic.org/download/

Cream Creams are a popular choice for background colours too. So let me know which colour you would prefer for your course materials I’m open to suggestions... Don’t be afraid to ask

What to expect in your lessons Multi-sensory learning: We will use pictures, video clips, conversation, role plays, songs, audio recordings. We will find out how you learn best...

Visual learners You learn best through images and ‘seeing’ the learning resource. Try mind mapping http://www.mindmapping.com/ http://www.mindmapping.com/

Mind mapping examples

More maps...

Post it notes! Post it notes are a great way to aid vocabulary Put them all over your house, either: – Where you are most likely to see them, such as on the fridge – Where they are relevant – such as sticking the Spanish word for sofa on the sofa

Tidy your desk... Working in a tidy, uncluttered area will help you to organise your thoughts Use this approach with your notes too: buy a nice folder to keep your work well organised

Other strategies for visual learners Break down words into syllables using different coloured pens

Visual learning games Play games such as ‘pairs’ to improve memory and memorise words

Auditory learners You learn best through listening...

Auditory learning ideas Read your notes aloud Buy an audio CD or download a podcast Record yourself speaking and listen to it again and again until you are comfortable with it

WordTalk Download WordTalk, where your notes will magically come to life with a text-to-speech plugin for Microsoft Word: http://www.wordtalk.org.uk/Home/

Kinaesthetic learners Kin-aes-the-tic: A really long way of saying you learn best by ‘doing things’. Try: – Role plays – Talking with native speakers – Field trips – Interactive learning exercises online

Touch Touch is an important sense for ‘doing’ learners. Try tracing the sounds into sand or air. Try making the sounds out of plasticine Memorise facts while moving about

What else can I try? Buy a lined notebook for class; think about the colour of the paper too; you can buy all sorts of colours here: http://www.thedyslexiashop.co.uk/

What else can I try? Every student is different; if you think of an idea that might help, share it with your tutor! Don’t compare yourself to others; everybody learns at a different pace And above all...
