1 The Water Cycle

2 Learning Objectives Objectives
Students will be able to identify the components on the water cycle Students will be able to identify sources of water and how it interacts with the environment Common Core Standards SC.5.E.7.4 Distinguish among the various forms of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, and hail), making connections to the weather in a particular place and time. SC.5.E.7.5 Recognize that some of the weather-related differences, such as temperature and humidity, are found among different environments, such as swamps, deserts, and mountains. ISTE Student Standards ISTE 1C. Creativity and Innovation-Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues

3 Where does water exist? Clouds Precipitation Streams, Rivers, & Oceans
Snow Rain Sleet Hail Streams, Rivers, & Oceans In the ground All living things!

4 How does it move? Precipitation Infiltration Runoff Evaporation
Capillary action Evapotranspiration Freezing Condensation

5 Precipitation Condensed water vapor that comes from the clouds Rain
Sleet Snow Hail

6 Infiltration/Capillary Action
Water that does not runoff into rivers can be absorbed by plants Water seeps into the ground Water is then absorbed by plants through the soil

7 Runoff Precipitation pours down and falls to the earth
If it is not rain, the snow/sleet/hail will melt first Water forms small channels in the soil Eventually, running off into river Then lakes Finally, seas and oceans

8 Evapotranspiration/Evaporation
Heat from the sun turns water from the earth into a vapor The vapor is then in the atmosphere Evapotranspiration Water that is absorbed by the plants from the soil The roots push the water towards the leaves Water is used for photosynthesis Leftover water is converted into water vapor by the leaves and enters the atmosphere

9 Freezing & Condensation
Water vapor collects in the atmosphere Water vapor changes into tiny particles of ice/water droplets The particles come close together and form cloud and fog in the sky The clouds accumulate enough particles and then the process starts all over!

10 A video to review

11 Quiz Time!

12 Which of the following are forms of precipitation?
A. Snow B. Rain C. Hail D. All of the Above

13 Evapotranspiration is the evaporation of water from plants.
A. True B. False

14 What is evaporation? A. Water freezes.
B. Water vapor meets cold air and changes back into liquid. C. Water gets warm and changes from liquid water to water vapor. D. Plants take in water from the soil.

15 Capillary Action is when…
A. Plants absorb water from the ground. B. Water runs off into lakes and oceans from streams. C. Water is released from the clouds. D. Water is released from plants into the gound.

16 What turns water into vapor?
A. Water treatment centers. B. The Sun C. The Moon D. Global Warming

17 WRONG

18 Correct! 

19 How did everyone do?
