Plotting for the Masses Efficiently Satisfying the Enterprise’s Mapping Needs

Enterprise Overview – Indianapolis/Marion County Major departments served: DPW DMD DPR IPD IFD MCSD Twp Fire Voter’s Registration Controller Approximately 500 GIS users

GIS Division Overview is part of Staff: GIS ManagerGIS Analysts (7) Contractual Staff (5)ISA Support (3) Tasks/duties: Technical SupportStatic Maps Data MaintenanceUser Training Application DevelopmentData Development Public PresentationsBusiness Consulting

Can you relate? Business as usual – plenty of work to do Email – requests should state their urgency Phone calls – someone needs to talk directly about their needs Walk Ins – can be either a non-user of GIS or someone with quite a bit of GIS experience Bottom Line – What is the need?

Keys to Efficiency Preparations Sufficient Hardware & Software Communication Standards & Consistency Innovation Training

Preparations Know your datasets and resources (.pdf’s, etc.) Create a single product (base map) that can be customized to satisfy many needs Create and use layer files, annotation sets, etc.

Sufficient Hardware & Software Maximize PC storage capacity and speed Use larger sized monitors (dual another option) Maximize Plotter memory and paper capacities Software should be commonly recognized and easily supportable Use software extensions when applicable

Communication Your department (whose working on what, etc.) Other departments (what’s everyone else doing) Get the word out (public presentations, website, etc.)

Standards & Consistency Agree upon a common look and feel for the maps that your department produces (parks are green, schools purple, logos, etc.) Only use two or three main sizes (ARCH E, letter, 60” x 72”, etc.) Peer Review (don’t leave home without it)

Innovation Have courage – try something new Experiment with new technology and techniques whenever possible Push your current software to the limit

Training Train yourself (conferences, internet courses) Train your customers (how to make their own maps, what to ask for, expectations, etc.) Learn and have fun (be open to experiment)

Current Map Formats Web-based applications (interactive) Web-based static maps (.pdf’s) Hard copy output Digital delivery (via email, CD & DVD)

Web-based (interactive)

Web-based (static)

What the Future Holds Web-based map library IDV
