PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE A paragraph is a group of sentences.

2 A Paragraph Has Three Main Parts:
1. Topic Sentence 2. The Body (Supporting Ideas) 3. The Concluding Sentence

3 A Paragraph Has Three Main Parts:
TOPIC SENTENCE 1. Supporting Idea a – b - 2. Supporting Idea a- b- 3. Supporting Idea CONCLUDING SENTENCE

4 Topic Sentence: The main idea of the whole paragraph.
Usually the first sentence of the paragraph Tells what the paragraph is about

5 Topic Sentence: Should not be too specific. Example:
This monolingual dictionary contains more than 42,000 words. (Limits the topic too much-there is nothing else for the writer to say.)

6 Topic Sentence: Should not be too general.
Example: The earth is round. (Is not a good topic sentence.)

7 Topic Sentence: I want to visit Alaska.

8 The Body (Supporting Ideas):
Every sentence must be directly related to the topic sentence. Give information about the topic sentence. Give details or examples.

9 The Body (Supporting Ideas):
a- Example or detail about the first supporting idea b- Example or detail about the first supporting idea Ex: First, the weather is beautiful there. I love cold weather. When the temperature is low, I have energy!

10 The Body (Supporting Ideas):
a- Example or detail about the second supporting idea b- Example or detail about the second supporting idea Ex: Second, I want to visit Alaska because I love nature. Alaska is pure and natural. I dream about its scenic landscape. In addition, there are wild animals.

11 The Body (Supporting Ideas):
a- Example or detail about the third supporting idea b- Example or detail about the third supporting idea Ex: Finally, I want to learn important information about the native people of Alaska.

12 The Concluding Sentence:
Summary of the information in the paragraph. The information in the concluding sentence is mostly similar to the information in the topic sentence.

13 The Concluding Sentence:
In conclusion, I hope to visit this wonderful state soon.

14 The Concluding Sentence:
Topic Sentence: I want to visit Alaska. Concluding Sentence: I hope to visit this wonderful state soon.

15 MY DREAM VACATION I want to visit Alaska. First, the weather is beautiful there. I love cold weather. When the temperature is low, I have energy!
