How do population pyramids help us learn about population?

Population pyramids are used to show information about the age and gender of people in a specific country. MaleFemale Population in millions In this country there is a high Birth Rate There is also a high Death Rate. This population pyramid is typical of countries in poorer parts of the world (LDCs.)

In some LDCs the government is encouraging couples to have smaller families. This means the birth rate has fallen.

MaleFemale Population in millions In this country the number of people in each age group is about the same. The largest category of people were born about 40 years ago. In this country there is a low Birth Rate and a low Death Rate. This population pyramid is typical of countries in the richer parts of the world (MDCs.)

Population in millions MaleFemale In this country the birth rate is decreasing. In the future the elderly people will make up the largest section of the population in this country. This is happening more and more in many of the world’s richer countries.

Male Female Population in thousands This country has a large number of temporary workers. These are people who migrate here especially to find a job.

Population pyramid for Mozambique. Population pyramid for Iceland.

File path - Student pool/Geography/Year 9/Population/Pyramids Your task: Open your own PowerPoint presentation. Go to Google and research population pyramids for 3 different countries. Find a population pyramid typical of a poor country (LDC) copy and paste it into your PowerPoint document then add labels to explain what is shown. Repeat for an MDC (rich) country. For a country of your choice copy and paste the pyramids for 2000, 2025 and 2050. Write about your country’s graphs and try to give reasons for the patterns. Explain how the population of this country is changing and say how that could affect the country. Make predictions about your country’s population in 2050. Challenge yourself: Can you figure out the dependency ratio for your country? Include this ratio in your presentation as well.

When you have finished: Find out some background information on each country and add this to the last slide of your presentation. Concentrate on facts and figures which you can use to compare the countries such as % of the children at school, type of jobs available, how rich or poor (GDP per capita.)……… E-mail to your teacher when it is complete!

1.1 Formulate predictions about geographic issues by manipulating raw data using computer-based technology. [e.g. GIS, spreadsheets, web-browsers, and presentation software. Can access technology successfully to use the given resource effectively Can identify the geographic issue at hand Can interpret raw data correctly and effectively Can draw conclusions from data analysis Can make predictions based on analysis of data

3.2 Explain patterns of population distributions and densities. PPT and Can list different patterns of population distribution Can explain the different patterns of population distribution Can explain the reason why different patterns are identified using examples

3.3 Interpret aspects of population, using vital statistics as tools. Can define and give examples of aspects of population such as birth rate, death rate, dependency ratio Can apply statistics to interpret aspects of population Can interpret census data and draw conclusions
