2 Spain: location and political organization Is the second largest country in continental Europe and the world’s third most popular tourist destination. Spain is a parliamentary monarchy. Political and administrative powers are distributed between central and regional (17) governments. Located in South-Western Europe, Spain is member of the EU since 1986

34 CARTAGENA, THREE MILLENIUMS OF HISTORY Capital of the Spanish Navy's Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since 18th century. One of the most important naval ports in Spain. There is a big naval shipyard. Cartagena was conquered by Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. It was the first of a number of cities which eventually were called Cartagena.
