The Power of Leadership Today’s Vision is Tomorrow’s Reality

THE POWER GAME

WHAT IS The Power Game Getting ahead without stepping on toes Gaining respect, not position Knowing the difference between real and perceived power - Overt and Covert Power Staying out of power struggles Knowing what you value and understand what is valuable

Real Power is NOT a Power Struggle

quote Personal power is not charisma, but the ability to create respect and admiration for the things you say, the things you do and the goals you want to achieve.

Understanding the diversity of power The Power of Influence The Power of Knowledge The Power of Information The Power of Relationships The Power of First Impressions The Power of Touch The Power of Speech The Power of Humor The Power of Storytelling The Power of Possibilities The Power to Dream

The Power of Influence The power is in you to make a difference! You do not need to be in a position of power. You need only be in a position to influence those in power. Few are in the prior and fewer are those who are not in the latter. Focus your vision by giving it a goal. Do not seek permission to influence those in power. Seize the opportunities to influence events as they come ur your way.

The Power of Knowledge Trust your intuition Knowledge IS power Take notes Find a mentor and learn from them Learn from every circumstance and situation Study and keep up to date with current trends Discover the policies and procedures of each environment Don’t be afraid of what you DON’T know

The Power of Information Gather facts and information before making a decision Read and glean Keep a record Watch, listen and learn Learn as much as you can, from as many people as you can, in as many ways as you can

The Power of Relationships Treat everyone, at every level with respect! Learn what not to do in relationships Keep your friends close and your enemies closer Get to know those who can teach you what you want to learn Find a mentor Know what to say, when to say it, how to say it and to whom

Power of First Impressions The greatest way to make a positive first impression is to demonstrate immediately that the other person, not you, is the center of action and conversation. Be the first to extend a handshake Closely related: You'll make a superb initial impression when you demonstrate good listening skills. Use the name of a new acquaintance frequently. Be careful with humor. Give up the need to be right Appearance counts. An individual's speaking style impacts the first impression, maybe more than we wish.

The Power of Touch Assess the quality of your handshake Be aware of “unconscious” intimate touching The healing power of touch

The Power of Speech How you say it: Assertive vs. Aggressive, soft vs. loud, confident vs. timid When you say it: Timing is everything Where you say it: In private or in public Why you say it: What is the motive behind what you say and who will it impact?

The Power of Humor Learn to laugh at yourself, not at others Learn how to “break the ice” when conversations become tense Remember, a year from now, you may laugh about a bad situation Having a serious discussion, does not mean you can’t smile

The Power of Storytelling Develop three stories that can motivate others Remember that connecting with others requires soliciting emotions Look around you for inspiring stories about the lives of others People tend to forget dates and data, but they do remember a good story Using a visual object is a great way to help others to remember the story

The Power of Possibilities All things are possible – just believe it Keep your options open for new opportunities Look to the future and plan with a purpose

The Power to Dream Dare to Dream and Dream Big Put your dream in writing Create goals to make your dream a reality “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change he world.” Harriet Tubman

The Power Game Getting ahead without stepping on toes Gaining respect, not position Real and perceived power - Overt and Covert Power Avoid power struggles Know what you value and understand what is valuable

Give up The illusion that there is “only one right answer” Win-lose mentality Distrust of political process (learn how it works and effect change through it) Being in control Doing it all by yourself

Develop An awareness of what is best for the organization or the majority The ability to give people options An appreciation for people who defend the system An open mind The ability to recognize what you can influence and what you cannot The realization that you can like and disagree with a person at the same time The talent for attacking the problem, not the individual

Using Power to Gain Credibility Pass information “up” in written form Keep reports and progress continually reported to anyone and everyone needing the information] Teach others to present potential solutions when presenting problems Be honest in all that you say and do Respect the process and the people

There’s Power in Giving Away Power
