2 LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON (LBJ) Grew up poor, was a teacher before entering Texas politics Worked up into the Senate, quickly became the powerful Majority Leader (of the Dems) Successfully rounded up the votes for the 1957 Civil Rights Act

3 LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON (LBJ) LBJ was added to the Kennedy ticket in 1960 to balance out JFK LBJ was considered a more conservative Southern Democrat LBJ won his own election in 1964 by painting conservative Republican Barry Goldwater as too eager to use nukes

4 LBJ’S “GREAT SOCIETY” Johnson cut taxes to encourage people & businesses to boost the economy The Economic Opportunity Act focused on helping the poor through education & service Head Start Pre-schools are still a big deal today VISTA and the Community Action Program encouraged volunteerism

5 LBJ’S “GREAT SOCIETY” LBJ created the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to create cheap public housing for the poor The Immigration Act of 1965 ended the quota-by nationality system Medicare (govt. health insurance for the elderly) Medicaid (for the poor)

6 LBJ’S “GREAT SOCIETY” Conservative criticism; This “social safety net” was built on deficit-spending Sometimes called “entitlements” Has increased our govt. budget & national debt
