3 LBJ Background Texas School teacher Entered politics in the 30’s The House and the Senate…was a master politician and dealer-maker in Congress Appealed to JFK as VP…a Protestant Southern Democrat to off-set JFK’s catholicism and New England roots

4 After JFK’s Assassination Kept a low profile for the rest of Kennedy’s term But did push through civil rights laws in Kennedy’s name

5 Election of 1964 LBJ Democrat 486 Campaigned on ending poverty and civil rights Barry Goldwater 82 against government interference in social and economic issues and advocated the use of th bomb for Cuba and North Vietnam

6 A Mandate Also…Democrats took control of Congress

7 The Great Society And its war on poverty…expansion of social welfare: 1964 Economic Opportunity Act – The Job Corps Trained Americans for good jobs…free, free babysitting, much assistance – Vista (Volunteers in service to America (like a domestic Peace Corps)

8 More Social Programs Head Start…for underprivileged children and offered education to parents Community Action Programs…federal money to neighborhoods…neighborhood watches, etc

9 1964 Tax Cuts…DID help to stimulate the economy Civil Rights Act of 1964…to end discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin Immigration Act of 1965…ended National Origins quotas

10 1965 Voting Rights Act: Federal marshalls sent South to register Black voters The Elementary and Secondary School Act…Federal money to public and parochial schools for supplies, text boos Neighborhood medical clinics

11 Federal Money for Low-income housing Created HUD Department of Transportation

12 The Big Ones Medicare: Money for hospital and medical care for the elderly (generally retired) Medicaid: medical and hospital care for those on welfare

16 More Rights of the Accused Miranda v Arizona: rights to be read upon arrest These liberal decisions made conservatives angry. Republicans will use these cases against the democrats in 1968 Said that Democrats were soft on crime

18 Results of the Great Society Programs Poverty DID decrease dramatically 1962…..21% 1973…..11% BUT tax cuts and increased federal spending caused a deficit that lasted for years and years
