Poor whites (immigrants) scared Slaves will take their jobs so they don’t like slavery! 1. Mostly farmland 2. Small cities/towns 3. Few Factories 4. Use rivers to transport goods 5. 14 DUH! Cotton production increased PS: so did slave use! By 1860… 1 out of 7 people are slaves! 4 million!

Rather than moving away from slavery, the South became more dependent on it.

True or False: 7 out of 10 people in the South did NOT own slaves.

TRUE!!! % of S. White Families Owning Slaves in 1860 About 1,150,000 Families owned no slaves

Then why did so many people support slavery? It was known as the peculiar institution. *People didn’t necessarily want it or love it, but they depended on it for their economy “Slavery is like holding a Wolf by the ears, you don’t like it, but you don’t dare let go”

PEOPLE AGAINST SLAVERY… 1.Abolitionists – “save the slaves” 2.Slaves – “save me” PEOPLE FOR SLAVERY … 1.South. Guys – “save my money” 2.Immigrants – “save my job!”
