3 Summer Reading Celebration Choose your topic for next year before the end of the school year. Summer reading lists are passed out in May to students in Kindergarten through 4 th. Each grade level has their own suggested summer reading list with a goal for each grade level.

4 Summer Reading Parents’ Letter Dear Parents, At University Elementary School, we always offer Summer Reading lists to our students, along with a plan to encourage them to read a variety of books. Please help your child get a head start for school by reading appropriate books over the summer. You may read books from the list or choose some of your own titles. Look for books on your shelves at home, at the local bookstores, and at the Shreve Memorial Library.

5 Summer Reading Parents’ Letter We always have a celebration after the first few weeks of school. Your child will want to participate and be recognized at that celebration. Please help your child do the following: Keep up with the books he or she has read. Use this form or list them on a piece of paper. Please include title, author, and your signature. Involve your child in an organized Summer Reading Program either at Shreve Memorial Library or Barnes & Noble. Register your child on bookadventure.com to help him practice his comprehension skills and earn prizes. Return to school with a list of what he or she has read, including things you may have read to him. We will give the deadline and the date of the celebration in “Tuesday Tidbits” in August.

15 Delightful Dozen Second Grade Read at least one book by each author during the allotted time period. The authors for this year include: Marc Brown, Tomie DePaola, Gail Gibbons, Patricia Riley Giff, Kevin Henkes, Steven Kellogg, Leo Lionni, Arnold Lobel, Patricia Polacco, Cynthia Rylant, one nonfiction book, and one free choice book. Take and pass an Accelerated Reader test on each book. Fill out the form with the title, author, and call number. Return the form to the library by the due date. Students who complete the form and pass the tests will participate in a popsicle party during the last week of school.

16 Spring into Reading First Grade Read at least 20 books during the allotted time period. Take and pass an Accelerated Reader test for each book. Students who pass the required number of tests will participate in a popsicle party during the last week of school.

17 National Children’s Book Week Read-a-thon: invite guests from the community to read to the students. Book cover contest Bookmark contest Character dress up day Classroom door decorating contest “Meet the Author”: First grade students are writing and illustrating their own books this year. They will be reading their books during the “Meet the Author” celebration.
