2 Korea- The division After WWII, Korea is split into two states at the 38th parallel, Japanese troops north of the 38th parallel surrender to the Soviet; Japanese troops south of the parallel surrender to the Americans Two nations developed; one communist = North Korea and one democratic = South Korea

3 1949 Soviets and US leave Korea
Both North and South Korea claim ownership of the entire country June 1950, North Korea invades South Korea American reaction: Oh no, another Asian country about to fall to communism! NO! Truman decides to take military action

4 Korea divided at the 38th parallel
This war went back and forth with no one winning for three years

5 War This war lasts 3 years, , and is a stalemate (no side wins outright control of the entire country) USA stopped communism from spreading to South Korea To this day Korea is divided: North Korea is communist and South Korea is democratic…divided along the 38th parallel line (DMZ) US troops are still stationed in South Korea
