Shocked Americans Nationalist fled to Taiwan 1950: USSR and China sign a treaty of friendship and alliance. US needed a new ally in Asia  Rushed to rapidly recover Japan’s industrial economy

5 Cold War turns Hot 1945-Allies divided Korea into two zones Northern Zone – Soviets Southern Zone – US troops Led to civil war North Korea led by communist leader Kim Il Sung South Korea led by Syngman Rhee Kim Il Sung Syngman Rhee

6 U.S. Involvement South Korea economically unstable U.S. feared SK would fall to communism U.S. helped build up SK military 1949 US and Soviet remove their troops.

12 Election of 1952 The war became an issue in 1952 election Republican candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower Democrat candidate Adlai Stevenson Eisenhower promised to end Korean War yet still resist spread of Communism Who won?

13 The War “Ends”  Eisenhower lived up to his promise  Bombing raids in NK increased by the U.S. May,1953  July 27 th, 1953 an armistice  Agreement to stop fighting, not an official peace treaty  Korea nearly the same after the war as before  Before war After war 
