2 A Divided Nation 1. Korea was divided after WWII at the 38th parallel.
2. North Korea-Communist government(Ally of Soviet Union) South Korea-rule by dictatorship (but not communist).

3 B. North Korea Attacks 1. In 1950 North Korea attacked South Korea
2. Wanted to unify nation under communist rule. 3. Overran much of South Korea 4. U.S. organized U.N. forces to help

4 C. North Korea Stopped 1. U.N. forces mostly American and South Korean troops 2. Stopped North Korea at Pusan Perimeter 3. Port city in S.E corner of peninsula

5 D. U.N. Forces advance 1. Americans cut off rail lines to North Korean troops 2. Cut off food and supplies 3. North Korean troops in South surrendered. 4.By November, U.N. forces advanced north, to close to China’s border at the Yalu river

7 E. China gets involved 1. Mao Zedong feared attack from U.N. forces
2. Sent forces to help the North. 3. Pushed U.N. troops to 38th parallel

8 F. War turns into stalemate
1. In 1953, both sides signed an armistice to end the fighting. 2. Created a DMZ (demilitarized zone) along 38th parallel. 3. No peace treaty was ever signed.

9 G. Two Koreas 1. North Korea remained communist
2. South Korea a capitalist economy 3. U.S. gave S. Korea economic aid 3. Today S. Korea has a high standard of living 4. Today N. Korea remains poor, with many people starving

10 H. South Korea 1. By 1960s S. Korea economy was stable
held first elections 3. Today is a democracy North Korea 1. Kim Il Sung kept country isolated 2. The country remained poor 3. Cult of personality around Kim 4. Today still holds on to hard-line communism
