Chapters Coordinator Helps Sections By… 10/31/20153 Region 4 can help with the formation of new Chapters and Affinity Groups (more on charts 5-9) Region 4 can help re-vitalize or maintain the activity level of an existing Chapter –By identifying Distinguished Lecturers –By providing top-rate, relevant meeting ideas –By helping to arrange meetings at local Chapter’s location –By connecting your Chapter to more active Chapters –Participation in EIT – Region 4 supported technical conference

4. IEEE Societies and Communities IEEE has 38 Technical Societies –provide benefits to members within specialized fields of interest. Society memberships enable you stay current within your chosen technology profession, keep in touch with your peers, and invest in your career. IEEE has 7 Technical Councils –groups of societies working together in broad areas of technology. Councils sponsor activities which benefit individuals in all of the member societies. IEEE has 4 Affinity Groups –Consultants Network, GOLD, Life Members, WIE

Starting a new Chapter New Chapters are easy to start –Signatures of at least 12 IEEE Section voting members who are members of the Society –Approval of the Section Executive Committee –Submit petition for the formation of a new Chapter to MGA Joint Chapters covering two or more Societies Joint Chapters of two or more contiguous Sections

6. Starting a new Chapter Changes to the Geographic Unit Formation Petition Process –Revisions take effect in 2012 –Approved by MGA Board at November 2011 meeting –Affects formation of Sections, Subsections, Chapters and Affinity Groups –Three changes (described as follows) 1. Petition organizer to communicate intent to begin petition process with geo’s parent executive committee prior to gathering signatures. –Ensures awareness of the organizer’s intent and willingness to coordinate efforts with parent org.

7. Starting a new Chapter Revisions for 2012 (continued) 2. Organizer to complete a business plan summary to indicate planned meetings and activities for the initial 6 months. –Includes a signature of member of the geographic parent executive committee. –Indicates parents endorsement of the business plan. 3. Petition signers must have been IEEE members for a minimum of six months.

8. Starting a new Chapter A Chapter can be relatively independent –Chapter has their own budget, calendar, distribution list, web site, etc. A Chapter can be more integral to the Section –Chapter meetings organized and funded by the Section In all cases, L31 meeting reports are used to indicate if the meeting was a Chapter meeting –Chapters having 2 or more technical meetings per year receive a $200 rebate from IEEE HQ as part of annual Section rebate –Chapters having 6 or more technical meetings per year qualify for an additional $75 Activity Bonus
