2 Objectives To introduce students to and remind them of the responsibilities and commitments as a pharmacist, and pharmacy students. To outlines the essential attitudes and behaviors that signify professionalism and that should be developed and practiced by all students.

3 Objectives To teach student tenets that are provided as a guide for them to evaluate their personal and professional development throughout their coursework, professional activities, and advanced practice experiences as they transition into practicing members of the pharmacy profession. By incorporating these tenets into both their personal and professional lives, students can begin to develop the lifelong professional behaviors and attitudes expected of members of the profession and by the patients they serve.

Altruism: Pharmacy students must recognize that the patient is the top priority in all health care decisions. For example, one may be working in a pharmacy or participating in medical rounds during clerkships and be too busy to provide the patient with the educational information that he or she is seeking. In such situations, it is important to give unselfishly of one’s time and service, placing what is in the best interest of the patient above anything else. Students must actively listen, be patient, and be compassionate when interacting with patients to establish and maintain mutual trust. By understanding individual patient needs, using pharmacotherapeutic knowledge, and evaluating interventions, pharmacy students can contribute to therapies that maintain or improve a patient’s quality of life.

Honesty and Integrity: Always tell the truth. Preserving patient confidentiality. Always acting with strong ethical conduct.

Respect for Others: Treat others as you would want to be treated. Pharmacy students should consistently demonstrate respect for others, whether they are patients, peers, faculty, preceptors, or other health care providers.

Professional Presence: Students must dress and carry themselves in a way that will instill confidence and trust with patients and health care colleagues; for example, one should always wear a clean, pressed white coat.

14 Conclusion Your pharmacy course is preparing you to enter a profession. This means you must conduct yourself professionally at all times. Competence. You’re good at what you do – and you have the skills and knowledge that enable you to do your job well. 2. Reliability. People can depend on you to show up on time, submit your work when it’s supposed to be ready, etc. 3. Honesty. You tell the truth and are upfront about where things stand. 4. Integrity. You are known for your consistent principles. 5. Respect For Others. Treating all people as if they mattered is part of your approach. 6. Self-Upgrading. Rather than letting your skills or knowledge become outdated, you seek out ways of staying current. 7. Being Positive. No one likes a constant pessimist. Having an upbeat attitude and trying to be a problem-solver makes a big difference. 8. Supporting Others. You share the spotlight with colleagues, take time to show others how to do things properly, and lend an ear when necessary. 9. Staying Work-Focused. Not letting your private life needlessly have an impact on your job, and not spending time at work attending to personal matters Listening Carefully. People want to be heard, so you give people a chance to explain their ideas properly.
