Ethical Dilemmas What would you do?

It is 1:00 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

You are walking past an ATM at the mall and you see some cash left in the slot. You look around and see no one near the machine that might be the owner. Someone must have just used the machine and then forgotten to take the cash. You walk over to the machine and see that there are two $20 bills and the receipt has been left as well. $40 is not that much but you could but those CD’s you’ve wanted and go out to eat. The mall is just about to close. What do you do?

A male/female friend of yours calls you and says that they have an extra ticket to go to the biggest Wisconsin Badgers game of the year! The seats are incredible and you won’t have to pay anything for them, just chip in for gas. You two have been friends for years but also you know that this friend wants to be “more than just friends.” You have absolutely no desire to date this person, and in fact, you have recently starting seeing someone else. What do you do?

You are out at the movies with a group of friends. As you are exiting the theater you see your engaged friend walk out holding hands with another person. Your engaged friend sees you and begs you not to say anything about it. It is obvious that this friend is not ready to married yet. What do you do?

Tasha, age 19, is single and 4 month pregnant. She uses drugs that endanger her baby. Her mother tries to persuade her to give up drugs. She refuses. She also refuses to go see a doctor for she feels that the doctor will make her feel bad about her drug- use. You have been friends since high school and she has always trusted you. What do you do?

You and your friend go into a department store. You decide to pocket a pair of socks, and your friend steals a $500 leather jacket. You get caught and have to go before a jury. Should you both receive the same punishment?

What is Integrity? A strict adherence to a code of moral values or standard of conduct. How does a person’s choices in these situations reflect their level of integrity? Ask yourself: What if EVERYONE did what I am about to do? What would the world be like?

… then what should you do? Follow those who have a reputation for good integrity. Ask them for advice. Encourage others to do the right thing in a respectful way. Teaching others is the best way to learn something for yourself. Speak up when you see something going on that is unethical. Ignoring unethical behavior makes it easier for people to get away with it. Then everyone suffers.
