Spotting for 1st paper

First page Your name Title of Film Director’s name Composer’s name

A first paragraph My film ------- follows a main character through a series of mishaps. It’s a well- acted comedy of some merit. The music for the film is for full orchestra, film driven, and containing but one theme that occurs diegetically as well as under the credits.

Spotting. Not like the Text #11. Robin Hood Fights Little John (1:23) Music starts after Robin Hood says “Wait- I’ll get myself a staff,” and fades out as Robin and Little John laugh.

But like this: #11. (1:23 - 1:55) Robin Hood Fights Little John Music assigned to Little John proceeds with variations, fading out as Robin and Little John laugh. Major, fast, 2/4, strings and woodwinds, light, cute, soft, plucky. A Mouse when RH lands in water.

Even for no music if important #15. (1:55 - 1:59) no music but could have used some soft strings under dialog to help project the friendly conversation as RH enlists LJ to his band of merry men.

–Ideal Analysis – Here is a sample of what I will want in each spot in your analysis papers this first time (due at the mid-term) in two formats: (1) the subjects I want included, and (2) an example in real terms.

Music: (a) dynamics - loud or soft; (b) orchestration - what type of instruments are playing - woodwind, brass (both "wind" instrument types if that's all you can determine), string, percussion, guitars, drums, voices, etc., (c) rhythm - fast/slow, duple/triple, etc. (d) pitch - major/minor, scales/leaps, melody/harmony/counterpoint. etc.

–Relationship of Music to Film: any aspect of the film with which the music seems to associate as in –(a) one shot to the next - cuts, dissolves, wipes, establishing shots, voice over, etc. –(b) direct association - stingers, Mickey Mouses, etc. –(c) any relationships between characters (themes) or plot, as in foreshadowing, –(d) relationship between diegetic music and the regular score,

–Other roles of music in film? –(a) film driven; plot driven; character driven; –(b) role of preceding lack of music; –(c) relationships between a spot in one section of the film and another earlier on (*very* important!!!); –(d) diegetic music

–An Actual Example: #12. (18:56-21:22) - music begins loud (full orchestra jarring us awake after no music for 5 minutes), very fast dance rhythm in two four, melody with harmony accompanying the moving train establishing shot; music changes at 19:04 to soft, strings only, slow rhythm, harmony as shot dissolves to dining car interior; music changes again at 19:24 to fast, brass, "growling" foreshadowing of danger as the villain enters the dining car and then ends with a stinger as our hero sees the villain for the first time: closeup of eyes only; at 19:39 the score fades as diegetic rock music appears briefly (5") from a radio on screen; this dissolves to the music in last part of scene which resembles that at the beginning of film under credits!
